Quick Steps on How to Watch Japanese TV From Anywhere With a VPN

  1. Select a reputable VPN provider, subscribe, download, and install the VPN.
  2. Launch the VPN and connect to a Japanese server.
  3. Go to your favorite Japanese TV streaming website/app and watch your favorite Japanese entertainment.

Japanese TV and Geo-restrictions

Most streaming services, including Japanese TV channels, don’t own the content they broadcast. They are like distributors, getting content from producers and other media houses. The producers and media houses control where their content should be watched, and they may lease it to other streaming services to make more revenue.

Thus, Japanese TV services are bound by licenses and distribution agreements to only make the content available in Japan and not anywhere else. To abide by the agreements, Japanese TV services, in turn, implement geo-restrictions that make it hard to stream the content outside the country.

This practice can be unjust for users who pay monthly subscription fees to miss their favorite shows when they travel abroad. It also may sound harsh if the content is available for free in Japan. Nonetheless, you can bypass the geo-restrictions with the help of a VPN and catch up with your favorite Japanese shows on the go.

How to Unblock Japanese TV Using a VPN

Geo-restrictions mostly rely on geo-location. Streaming services such as Japanese TV can know your location from your IP address. Most online services use this technology to block you from accessing the content in restricted regions.

To bypass the Japanese TV geo-restriction, you need to spoof your location to Japan. This way, you will trick the Japanese TV services that you are accessing their content from Japan. To spoof your geo-location, you need a Japanese IP address, and the best way to get one is to use one of the best VPNs for streaming.

A VPN achieves this feat by assigning you a Japanese IP address. When you connect to a Japanese server, the VPN routes your online traffic through the server. The server then masks your actual IP address with a Japanese IP address. Hence, online services analyzing your online traffic will conclude that you are in Japan.

Besides changing your IP address, a VPN also protects your online activities over the internet. You can use a VPN for torrenting and downloading content safely, bypass ISP throttling, and unblock other online content.

Free VPN to watch Japanese TV

There are lots of free VPN services, but almost all of them are not suitable for watching Japanese TV from abroad. Free VPNs have many shortcomings, very few benefits, and they don’t meet the criteria for streaming.

First of all, most free VPNs lack reliable servers in Japan. Their server networks only consist of popular locations such as the US, and they also offer slow speeds due to congestion. Moreover, free VPNs don’t offer unlimited bandwidth and often have speed caps. As a result, you will experience lags, buffering, timeouts, and you will be forced to watch content in low quality.

Additionally, the majority of free VPNs don’t take your security and privacy seriously. Most of them will share or sell your online data to third parties. They also track and keep a record of your online activities, a practice that can compromise your privacy. Other than that, they may also bombard you with aggressive and intrusive ads.

Overall, as enticing as free VPNs might sound, avoid them at all costs. If you wish to try a free VPN service, take advantage of the free trial or 30-day money-back guarantee offered by the above reputable VPN services.

Wrap up

Watching Japanese TV from abroad can be frustrating due to geo-restrictions as most Japanese TV channels only work in Japan. Good news though, you can bypass the geo-restriction blocks and watch your favorite Japanese entertainment freely with a reputable VPN.

The top VPN picks for Japanese TV offer unlimited bandwidth, faster speeds, and reliable connections. You won’t experience buffering or lagging while watching your Japanese content in HD, and you can also use the VPNs to unblock other online content and torrent safely and securely.

Watching Japanese TV via a VPON

Mine is more of a request for additional information than a review, I guess. The info provided should be sufficient for even an aging semi-techie like me to get Japanese programming to my PC. But is there a way to move it into the living room ... i.e. schedule program/series recordings on a DVR and watch on a TV ... like programming from cable, satellite, YTTV, etc. Currently the only solution that we have found is TVJapan, a single channel of mashed up Japanese programming through DirectTV. Thanks.
