ADT acknowledges recent data breach after customer data appears on the dark web
Security company ADT confirms it has suffered a data breach after a hacker leaked stolen customer data on a hacking forum on the dark web.
In an 8-K Filing addressed to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), ADT states that it recently experienced ‘a cybersecurity incident’.
An unauthorized party was able to gain access to the company’s computer system which contained customer data and copy those files. Among other things, the stolen data includes email addresses, phone numbers and postal addresses.
After employees discovered the data breach, ADT took steps to minimize the impact of the incident. Along with external cybersecurity experts, the company launched an investigation into the matter.
“Based on its investigation to date, the company has no reason to believe that customers’ home security systems were compromised during this incident. Additionally, the company has no reason to believe the attackers obtained other personally sensitive information such as credit card data or banking information,” ADT states in the filing.
The company, specialized in security and smart home solutions, says that only ‘a small percentage’ of all its customers’ personal information has been breached. To ease investors and other stakeholders, ADT states it believes that the incident has no material impact on the company’s operations and financial conditions.
Meanwhile, a hacker that goes with the moniker ‘netnsher’ claims to have stolen ADT’s customer data. On a popular hacking forum on the dark web he says he swiped 30,812 records, including 30,400 unique email addresses, full home addresses, user IDs and purchase history.
As of yet, ADT hasn’t responded to the claims of the hacker.
