Belgium is warning parents over connected toys: ‘Beware of cyberattacks’
Safeonweb has put out a warning for the upcoming Saint Nicholas Day: kids enjoy connected toys, but beware of the privacy risks.
It’s almost that time of year when kids are spoiled and overwhelmed with new toys. Just like in previous years, connected toys are once again on top of children’s wish lists. This includes interactive robots, talking dolls, smart watches, and other high-tech gadgets.
“Behind their seductive features lie potential risks to the privacy and safety of users, particularly the very young,” Safeonweb says.
Safeonweb is an initiative by the Center for Cybersecurity Belgium (CCB), Belgium’s cybersecurity authority, to inform citizens on topics regarding digital threats and online security.
Invasion of privacy is one of the risks that comes along with connected toys. Many of these toys are able to collect personal data, including voice recordings, videos, GPS location, and information about a child’s habits. “Poorly secured, this data can fall into the wrong hands,” Safeonweb warns.
Another pitfall of connected toys is that they generally don’t meet the highest security standards, meaning they can be hacked. A hacker could eavesdrop on conversations via a built-in microphone, or remotely take control of a toy.
Some toys that are connected to the internet could serve potentially harmful content to children. Young users could be subjugated to inappropriate videos, images or information.
Lastly, data that is collected by connected toys can be used for marketing purposes, exposing children to targeted advertising at a very young age.
Before parents buy connected toys, they should check online reviews and read the privacy policy carefully, Safeonweb recommends.
Furthermore, they should opt for toys that will receive software updates in the future and check what authorizations are requested. If possible, parents should limit permissions and only authorize functions that are essential for the toys to operate.
In addition, parents should change default passwords and replace them with a strong password, only use a secure Wi-Fi connection, and keep an eye on their child’s online behavior.
“Connected toys can provide enriching and educational experiences for children, provided they are used responsibly. By taking the time to inform yourself, secure the devices and accompany your children in their use, you can guarantee them hours of fun in complete safety,” Safeonweb concludes.
