Casio confirms data breach of customer data after cyberattack

Casio Computer has confirmed it suffered a data breach, which was caused by a third party ransomware attack.

Last week, the Tokyo-based tech company said that an unknown threat actor was able to access its corporate network, causing system failures. Because of that, some services could not be provided.

“We are investigating the details, but we are also investigating by an external specialized agency to check for information outflows, such as personal information and other important information,” Casio said in a statement.

A few days later, a ransomware operation called Underground claimed responsibility for the attack. Members of the group allegedly stole 204,9 GB of confidential corporate information, including personal details of employees, patent information and legal documents.

As soon as the threat actor published these details, Casio decided to update its statement on the ransomware attack. In its latest update, the company acknowledges both personal and confidential information was leaked in the attack.

According to Casio, personal information of its employees and staff members of affiliated companies have been exfiltrated. Furthermore, personal details of business partners, affiliated companies and people who visited the company in the past for an interview have been stolen.

In addition, internal documents containing legal and financial information, human resources planning, audit, sales and technical information were swiped by the attackers. Lastly, the threat actor was able to lay its hands on financial corporate information, such as contracts, invoices and sales with current and past business partners.

Casio is warning people to remain vigilant for any phishing emails and other unsolicited messages.

The Japanese company is also asking not to share any of the leaked information to minimize the damages. “Please refrain from spreading this information through social media, etc., as it could increase the damage caused by the leak of information on this case, violate the privacy of those affected, have serious effects on their lives and businesses, and encourage crime,” Casio says.

The Police and Personal Information Protection Commission have been notified of the incident so they can help remedy the situation.

“We apologize to our customers, business partners, and all other concerned parties for any concern and inconvenience this may cause. We take this situation very seriously, and we will do our utmost to prevent a recurrence by investigating the cause and further strengthening and thoroughly implementing our information security system,” the company concludes.
