Dutch police arrest admin of dark web marketplace Bohemia/Cannabia

The Dutch National Police has arrested one of the admins who was responsible for the maintenance of Bohemia/Cannabia. Another admin was arrested by Irish police officers.

Bohemia/Cannabia is considered the world’s largest illegal marketplace on the dark web. It offered a platform for sellers and buyers of large amounts of illegal drugs and cybercrime services, like DDoS attacks and malicious software.

On a daily basis, Bohemia/Cannabia displayed approximately 82,000 ads. The police registered about 67,000 transactions per month. The highest amount of revenue in one month was over € 12 million.

The National Police of the Netherlands have led the investigation into Bohemia/Cannabia since 2022 and were aided by law enforcement agencies from Ireland, the United Kingdom and the United States.

By the end of 2023, the law enforcement authorities were able to take down the dark web marketplace. The admins performed an ‘exit scam’ and decided to split the money among themselves, which was roughly € 5 million.

The Dutch National Police were eventually able to identify multiple administrators and arrested one of them at Schiphol airport. He was in the possession of many data carriers, data and bitcoins. A second suspect was handcuffed by the Irish authorities. More than € 8 million in virtual currency was seized during the arrest of the suspects, as well as two vehicles.

So far, a total of 58 sellers have been arrested in Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Ukraine, and the United States. Police officers expect to make more arrests in the nearby future.

“Administrators, sellers and buyers on illegal marketplaces often believe themselves to be elusive to the police and the judiciary. By conducting criminal investigations and prosecuting these criminals, it becomes clear that the dark web is not at all as anonymous as users may think. Due to international cooperation, the credibility and reliability of these markets have once again been severely damaged,” says Stan Duijf, Head of the operations unit National Investigation and Interventions, in a statement.

The investigation into Bohemia/Cannabia will continue.
