Europe to invest € 1.4B in deep tech in 2025

Next year, the European Union (EU) is going to invest € 1.4 billion to support deep tech research and high-potential start-ups.

According to the European Commission’s press release, the funding will come from the European Innovation Council (EIC), which is a part of the EU’s research and innovation program. The amount represents an increase of nearly € 200 million in comparison with 2024.

A bigger budget also means more improvements. For example, scale-ups will have better access to additional funding thanks to the EIC Strategic Technologies for Europe Platforms (STEP) scale-up scheme, which is expected to grow to € 900 million over the period 2025-2027.

In addition, the EIC will reserve € 120 million for emerging technologies, including autonomous robots, climate resilient crops, and medical diagnoses. An additional € 250 million will be allocated to so-called ‘earlier stage companies’ in specific target technologies, such as generative artificial intelligence, new space, agricultural technology, and future mobility solutions.

Because of the bigger budget, countries with lower levels of research and innovation performance will have the chance to gain subsidies for the development of deep tech.

An amount of € 634 million is reserved for start-ups and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to “develop, commercialize and scale up innovations” with the potential to create new markets or disrupt existing ones.

“The European Innovation Council has emerged as a game changer in EU support to breakthrough innovation. The targeted support, especially through the STEP scale-up call, will help bridge critical funding gaps and build a stronger, more resilient innovation ecosystem in Europe,” says Iliana Ivanova, Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth in a statement.

The European Innovation Council or EIC was launched in March 2021 as a supervisory authority to overview investments in deep tech start-ups. Goal is to fund research and development of technological advanced and sophisticated innovation in the European Union to keep up with or surpass other parts of the world.

So far, the EIC has supported more than 630 European companies and more than 450 research projects.
