Furniture company shuts down systems after cyberattack

Bassett Furniture Industries, Inc. noticed that an unauthorized party had gained access to its business network.

On Wednesday July 10, one of the largest furniture companies in the United States detected “unauthorized occurrences” on parts of its IT system. Upon detecting the furniture seller immediately took steps to mitigate the impact of the attack, including launching an investigation and implementing its incident response plan.

A hacker used ransomware to encrypt company data files, which crippled the day-to-day business at some level. To prevent the malicious software from spreading any further, Bassett Furniture decided to shut down some of its systems. As a result, the company is not operating its manufacturing facilities.

Retail stores and e-commerce platforms are still open for business to customers. However, the retailer can’t promise all orders will be delivered on time.

“The company is working to bring the impacted portions of its IT systems back online and implement workarounds for certain offline operations with the aim of reducing disruption to its ability to serve its retail, e-commerce and wholesale customers,” Bassett Furniture wrote in an 8-K Filing addressed to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

According to the notice, no personal information from customers was compromised during the attack. Because the investigation is still ongoing, the retailer can’t make any statements regarding the scope, nature or impact of the incident.

Until Bassett Furniture is fully recovered, the company expects that the security incident will have a considerate impact on its business operations. Whether it will hurt the company’s financial results, is hard to say at the moment.

As of yet, no hacking groups have taken credit for the ransomware attack.
