Google: "More than a quarter of our new code is generated by AI"
Google is fully dedicated to using AI to enhance its core business and improve its services. That's why more than a quarter of all new code at Google is generated by AI.
That’s what Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai said on Wednesday during the company’s 2024 third quarter earnings call.
He starts off by saying that Google’s commitment to innovation and long term focus and investment in AI are paying off and driving success for the company and its customers.
“We are uniquely positioned to lead in the era of AI because of our differentiated full stack approach to AI innovation, and we’re now seeing this operate at scale,” Pichai added.
According to the CEO, more than 2 billion people use Gemini models monthly to understand and operate across text, code, audio, image and video. Google’s large language model (LLM) will soon be available to more developers, starting with GitHub Copilot.
Alphabet doesn’t just use AI to advance its chatbot, but also to improve its coding processes and boost productivity and efficiency.
“Today, more than a quarter of all new code at Google is generated by AI, then reviewed and accepted by engineers. This helps our engineers do more and move faster,” Pichai stated.
Circle to Search, a new way to search and translate what’s on your screen, is now available on 150 million Android devices worldwide. A third of the people who have tried it now use it weekly, which according to Pichai is “a testament to its helpfulness and potential”.
Meanwhile, Google Lens is being used for over 20 billion visual searches every month. That makes it the fastest-growing query types on Search. According to Pichai this is just the beginning and we’ll all see “a rapid pace of innovation and progress”.
“I am energized by our progress, and the opportunities ahead. And we continue to be laser focused on building great products,” Pichai concluded the earnings call.
Alphabet’s revenue grew 15 percent to $ 88 billion during the third quarter of 2024 compared to last year. Net income rose by 34 percent to $ 26 billion. The Search division grew by $ 5 billion to a revenue of $ 49 billion. Revenue from YouTube ads, subscriptions and hardware also rose 27 percent from $ 8.3 billion to $ 10.6 billion.
