Hacker steals personal information from US credit service

An unknown threat actor was able to exfiltrate personally identifiable information from employees and independent contractors from Credit Risk Monitor Inc.'s network (CRMZ).

On July 19, the company detected unauthorized access within its computer network. CRMZ’s investigation showed that ‘an unauthorized actor’ was able to view or copy sensitive files between July 8 and July 17, 2024.

Researchers believe the attacker may have stolen personally identifiable information of employees and independent contractors but wouldn’t say what data may have been compromised. It also remains unclear how many people were affected by the incident.

“Upon detecting the unauthorized occurrences, the company immediately activated its incident response plan and began taking steps to contain, assess, and remediate the incident, including conducting an investigation with third-party cybersecurity specialists,” CRMZ says in an 8-K Filing addressed to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

People whose information was stored in the company’s files were notified about the potential data breach. Although there’s no evidence of abuse of personal information, affected employees may want to take steps to protect their information. For those people CRMZ is offering free credit monitoring and identity theft services.

The incident was also reported to law enforcement agencies. Investigators and cybersecurity experts from outside the company are currently looking into the impact and scope of the potential data breach.

CRMZ can’t say for sure whether the incident will have a material impact on its financial conditions or ongoing operations. “However, the situation remains fluid and CRMZ will continue to assess if and when such developments are reasonably likely to impact its financial condition and results of operations,” the company says.

Credit Risk Monitor Inc. or CRMZ is a New York-based financial company founded in 1999 and provides in-depth credit and financial analysis to provide financial insights for both public and private companies worldwide. It also calculates bankruptcy scores using artificial intelligence (AI).

In 2023, RCMZ had an annual revenue of $ 18.93 million. About 99 employees currently work at the company.
