Kaspersky offers six months of free anti-virus software for U.S. customers

Russian security software provider Kaspersky is offering free security products for six months, solely to consumers in the United States.

“Thank you for choosing and trusting Kaspersky throughout the years. We’re deeply moved with all the kind words and supportive messages received in these difficult times,” the company says in a banner that appears when U.S. businesses and citizens visit Kaspersky’s website.

“We’ve always strived and remain committed to provide the best cybersecurity there is – independent, transparent and expertly managed. Unfortunately, for now, you have one less choice in defending yourself against online threats.”

As a parting gift Kaspersky offers its U.S. customers a selection of their security solutions for free for six months.

In addition, the cybersecurity firm offers some free tips to keep you safe:

· Remember to always back up your data;

· Be wary of links and double-check their source before clicking; and

· Protect your identity online, change passwords regularly and keep them long and complex.

Earlier this week Kaspersky confirmed it is closing its U.S. branch after the Department of Commerce imposed a ban on Kaspersky products.

The U.S. government added Kaspersky to the Entity List, a black list containing the names of companies American enterprises aren’t allowed to conduct business with. The current geopolitical climate and national security concerns played a major role in this.

“Russia has shown time and again they have the capability and intent to exploit Russian companies, like Kaspersky Lab, to collect and weaponize sensitive U.S. information, and we will continue to use every tool at our disposal to safeguard U.S. national security and the American people,” Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo explained the ban in a statement.

According to Kaspersky “less than 50 employees” are affected by the decision to leave the United States.
