Kia will be sharing motorist data with governments and businesses

Kia has introduced Kia Insights, a new service that allows motorists, public organizations and commercial businesses to gain insights from their driving behavior.

According to the Seoul-based car manufacturer, Kia Insights translates the data that is generated by the car into relevant information, presented in the right context. Goal is to help motorists, public organizations and enterprises to make mobility smarter, safer and more sustainable.

Kia Insights extracts data from various sources in the car in order to identify relevant trends and developments. This information can help both public and commercial organizations to improve mobility issues, product development and research questions.

In addition, Kia Insights helps to identify potential improvements, such as optimization of driving behavior or more efficient use of vehicles. For example, thanks to Kia Insights’ analyses, Kia Netherlands was able to move up the charging time of 33% of Dutch Kia motorists from 18:00 to 23:00.

“This relatively small change in behavior, based on the insights gained, not only results in lower energy costs for the driver, but also relieves the electricity grid,” Kia writes in a press release.

The car manufacturer emphasizes that Kia Insights only provides third parties with insights based on data generated by its cars. The data itself remains stored within Kia’s secure environment. Owners can also choose which services they want to use and what data they want to share with the company.

“Kia maintains a high level of data security and develops new products and services with strict compliance with data protection rules. We safeguard the privacy of Kia drivers and put their needs first. They can therefore decide for themselves which services they use from us and what data they then want to share with us,” Sacha Pepermans, Connected & Reporting Coordinator at Kia Netherlands, says in a statement.
