Microchip Technology discloses cyberattack by unauthorized party

American chipmaker Microchip Technology has notified shareholders of a cyberattack. Currently, it’s unclear whether the threat actor was able or not to steal any sensitive company data.

In a 8-K Filing addressed to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the Arizona-based chip manufacturer says that on August 17 employees detected ‘potentially suspicious activity’ on some of its IT systems.

Upon detection, the company took matters into its own hands to assess, contain and recover from a possible cyberattack. On August 19, it became clear that an unknown threat actor succeeded in infiltrating certain servers and business operations.

“The company promptly took additional steps to address the incident, including isolating the affected systems, shutting down certain systems, and launching an investigation with the assistance of external cybersecurity advisors,” Microchip Technology says in the filing.

As a result of the incident, manufacturing facilities are not operating at full capacity. The chipmaker currently isn’t able to ship all orders in a timely manner. The company is doing all it can to bring the affected servers and computer systems back online, restore business operations, and mitigate the impact of the incident.

Since the investigation is still ongoing, Microchip Technology can’t go into details about the nature, scope, and impact of the incident. At the time, the company can’t say whether the incident will have an effect on its financial condition and business operation.

As of writing, no hacking group or ransomware operation has taken credit for the cyberattack on Microchip Technology.

Microchip Technology is an American corporation that was founded 35 years ago and manufactures microcontrollers and mixed-signal, analog and Flash-IP integrated circuits. These solutions are used by approximately 123,000 customers worldwide. In 2024 the company generated $ 7.6 billion in revenue.
