President Trump pardons Silk Road founder Ross Ulbricht

On his second day in office, president Donald Trump pardoned Ross Ulbricht, founder of one of the largest illicit marketplaces on the dark web Silk Road.

“I just called the mother of Ross William Ulbricht to let her know that in honor of her and the Libertarian Movement, which supported me so strongly, it was my pleasure to have just signed a full and unconditional pardon of her son, Ross.

The scum that worked to convict him were some of the same lunatics who were involved in the modern-day weaponization of government against me. He was given two life sentences plus 40 years. Ridiculous!,” Trump posted on Truth Social.

Ulbricht, also known as Dread Pirate Roberts, was arrested in 2013 and convicted in 2015 for trafficking drugs via Silk Road.

At the time, Silk Road was one of the largest marketplaces on the dark web were users could buy synthetic drugs, guns, fake passports, credit card information, personally identifiable information, and much more. Users could also order hitmen, computer hackers and other professionals to provide illegal services.

During the trial, prosecutors said that at least six people had died from drugs purchased through Silk Road. Prosecutors also said that Ulbricht planned to have people he considered a threat killed. However, no evidence of this was provided. Ulbricht was sentenced to life in prison for drug trafficking, money laundering, and computer hacking.

After his conviction, Ulbricht remained popular with a group of people in the crypto world, because he facilitated cryptocurrency payments on Silk Road. A ‘Free Ross’ campaign was launched on Twitter to facilitate his release.

“Ross was just granted a FULL AND UNCONDITIONAL PARDON by @realDonaldTrump. Words cannot express how grateful we are. President Trump is a man of his word and he just saved Ross’s life. ROSS IS A FREE MAN!!!!!,” reads the latest message on the ‘Free Ross’ account on X.
