Security company ADT suffers another data breach
For the second time in two months, home and small business security company ADT has become the victim of a cyberattack.
In an 8-K Filing addressed to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), ADT said it recently found out that an unauthorized actor was able to access the company’s network via compromised login credentials of a third-party business partner.
ADT believes the attacker was able to extract “certain encrypted internal ADT data” associated with employee user accounts. So far there’s no evidence that any of the stolen information has been abused.
Furthermore, the company believes no customers’ personal information was exfiltrated, or that customers’ security systems have been compromised.
“The company promptly took steps to shut down the unauthorized access, notified the third party its systems had been compromised, launched an investigation, and implemented counter measures intended to safeguard the company’s information technology assets and operations,” ADT states.
The security company is currently working with external cybersecurity experts and law enforcement agencies to investigate the scope and impact of the incident.
To make sure the breach doesn’t spread any further, ADT decided to shut down some of its systems. That caused some disruptions to the company’s information systems. At the moment the company can’t make any announcements regarding the operational and financial impact of the incident.
So far, no threat actor has come forward to claim responsibility for the hack.
This is the second time in two months ADT has to deal with a data breach. Early August the security company informed the SEC of a ‘cybersecurity incident’, in which a threat actor stole customer information.
A hacker called ‘netnsher’ offered the information for sale on a hacking forum on the dark web. He claimed to have swiped 30,800 customer records, including email addresses, home addresses, user IDs, and purchase history.
