Voodoo acquiring BeReal for half a billion euros
Social medium BeReal has been acquired by Voodoo. The French company paid 500 million euros for the acquisition.
BeReal is a social network where users are asked to post a picture of themselves and their surroundings at any given time of the day. Users have a two minute time window to share a photo of what they’re doing with their friends. The photos disappear after 24 hours. According to the developers, the absence of ‘likes’ and ‘followers’ creates a safe space for sharing real moments without anxiety.
BeReal currently has more than 7 billion downloads worldwide and 40 million active users. Half of them use the app at least 6 days a week. BeReal is one of the most popular social platforms in the United States, Japan and France.
Voodoo, the company that has acquired BeReal, says in a blog post that BeReal has revolutionized social media by encouraging people to share real, unfiltered experiences with close friends. By acquiring the social network app, Voodoo wants to “further accelerate its diversification into consumer apps”, and help to unlock its full potential.
Voodoo aiming at ‘sustainable growth’
“BeReal achieved incredible user loyalty and growth, showing there is a universal need to share real, unfiltered experiences with close friends. We are very excited to bring our teams together and leverage Voodoo’s know-how and differentiated technologies to scale BeReal into the iconic social network for authenticity,” says Alexandre Yazdi, co-founder and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at Voodoo.
Alexis Barreyat, founder and CEO of BeReal, fully supports the acquisition. “Voodoo has a proven track record of driving significant growth in mobile apps. Their resources and expertise will help bring BeReal on a sustainable growth path while continuing to deliver on its mission to create an authentic world that keeps you connected with the people you really care about.”
Aymeric Roffé, currently CEO of the social network Wizz, will take over as CEO of BeReal. Barreyat will remain involved in BeReal and work hand-in-hand with Roffé and Voodoo’s management team.
