Cisco investigating potential data breach

Cisco, an American developer and manufacturer of digital communication technology, confirms it has launched an investigation after a claim of an alleged data breach appeared on the dark web.

A threat actor that calls himself ‘IntelBroker’ posted a message on Breach Forums on Monday, suggesting he and two other hackers –‘EnergyWeaponUser’ and ‘zjj’- stole sensitive corporate data belonging to Cisco.

According to the post on the hacking forum, the hackers breached Cisco on June 10, 2024, and were able to steal a large amount of information.

The compromised data reportedly includes GitHub and GitLab projects, SonarQube projects, source code, hardcoded credentials, certificates, customer SRCs, confidential Cisco documents, Jira tickets, API tokens, AWS private buckets, Cisco technology SRCs, Docker builds, Azure storage buckets, private and public keys, SSL certificates, and Cisco premium products.

“I have a new and exciting thread coming up. Stay tuned. It may break the media,” IntelBroker says on X.

The San Jose-based tech company says it’s aware of the data breach claim and is investigating the matter.

“Cisco is aware of reports that an actor is alleging to have gained access to certain Cisco-related files. We have launched an investigation to assess this claim, and our investigation is ongoing,” a spokesperson of the company told BleepingComputer.

IntelBroker is a well-known hacker, probably best-known for the data breach at DC Health Link in March 2023. DC Health Link is an organization that administers the health care plans of United States House members, staff and their families. Personal information of roughly 170,000 individuals was stolen.

Other data breaches IntelBroker claims to be responsible for include AMD, T-Mobile, Apple, Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), Home Depot, and the Europol Expert Platform (EPE).
