Your data is safe with us when you’re using our free built-in VPN, Mozilla promises

Mozilla is reassuring Firefox users that no data will be sold to third parties to make a profit if they use the free built-in VPN.

“We’ve heard concerns about so-called ‘free VPNs,’ which often rely on advertising or selling user data to generate revenue. Firefox’s built-in VPN is designed differently. It does not sell your browsing data and does not inject advertising into your traffic,” the web browser designer says in a recently published blog post.

“Instead, we offer a limited amount of browser-level protection for free, alongside Mozilla VPN, our paid, unlimited, full-device VPN service,” the company continues.

On Tuesday, Mozilla officially launched Firefox 149. Without a doubt, the most important new feature of Mozilla’s latest web browser version is the free built-in VPN.

It offers users 50GB of data every month. IP address protection will be paused until the next cycle as soon as users reach their monthly limit. Users who need more data will have to subscribe to a Mozilla VPN subscription.

However, there’s one major downside. The free VPN feature in Firefox is currently only available in a handful of countries, including France, Germany, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The new feature will most likely be introduced in other countries as well, but as of writing, there’s no news on which ones and when.

The free built-in VPN is currently rolling out as a beta to Firefox desktop users in the aforementioned countries. Mozilla says it wants to learn from users’ feedback to improve the anonymous web browsing experience.

“Protecting privacy online is an ongoing effort. As the web evolves, new technologies create both opportunities and challenges for keeping personal information safe. By continuing to build these protections into Firefox, we aim to make the web safer, more transparent, and more respectful of the people who use it,” Mozilla says.
