Luxury brand Cartier admits data breach, hackers obtain customer data

The French luxury company Cartier has become the victim of a cyberattack. The attackers were able to obtain personal information of an unknown number of customers.

In an email sent to affected customers, Cartier says that an ‘unauthorized party’ gained access to its system and exfiltrated ‘limited client information’.

“We contained the issue and have further enhanced the protection of our systems and data. We have also informed the relevant authorities and are working with leading external cybersecurity experts,” the luxury brand says in a message that was shared on social media.

According to Cartier, the hackers were able to gather personal information, including full names, email addresses, countries of origin, and dates of birth. Affected customers don’t have to worry about their passwords; the hackers obtained no login credentials. The same goes for financial information like credit card details or other banking information.

Customers are advised to pay close attention to any unsolicited messages or any other suspicious correspondence. Scammers can use this incident to swindle unsuspecting and gullible people to collect even more personal information through targeted phishing attacks.

Fashion brands have become a popular target for hackers recently.

In May, both Dior and Adidas confirmed that they had been attacked by hackers who were able to steal personal details of an unknown number of customers, such as contact details, purchase histories, and preferences.

Just last week, lingerie retailer Victoria’s Secret decided to shut down its website for several days due to a ‘security incident’. In response, a company spokesperson told media outlets that the retailer immediately enacted its response protocols. Third-party cybersecurity experts are currently investigating the incident.
