MoneyGram confirms hackers stole sensitive customer data

United States financial payment service provider MoneyGram acknowledges that hackers recently stole personal information and transaction data during a cyberattack.

Last month, MoneyGram announced it was experiencing “a network outage” impacting connectivity to a number of its systems. The company was forced to shut down its website and app for five days.

In a statement released earlier this week, the company now says the attack was first detected on September 27. According to the press release, an unauthorized third party was able to access and acquire personal information of an undisclosed number of customers between September 20 and September 22.

During this short period of time, the hackers were able to collect a huge amount of personal and sensitive data, including full names, phone numbers, email addresses, postal addresses, dates of birth, a limited number of social security numbers, copies of driver’s licenses and other identification documents, bank account numbers, transaction information, MoneyGram Plus Rewards numbers, and criminal investigation information.

“The types of impacted information varied by affected individual,” the financial service provider states. How many clients have been affected by the breach remains unknown at the moment of writing.

MoneyGram points out it immediately took steps to “contain and remediate” the data breach, such as taking some of its systems offline.

Furthermore, the company launched a forensic investigation to look into the impact and scope of the incident. Cybersecurity experts from CrowdStrike and law enforcement agencies are assisting with the inquiry. Currently, the systems are back online and employees have resumed business as usual.

MoneyGram recommends affected customers to be on the lookout for fraud and identity theft by monitoring their account statements. U.S. customers are entitled to identity protection and credit monitoring services for two years.

MoneyGram is the second largest peer-to-peer money transfer company in the world, right behind Western Union. It processes over 120 million financial transactions per year from tens of millions of users. MoneyGram has an extensive network of 350,000 physical locations in 200 countries.
