NCSC launches new Vulnerability Research Initiative for industry partners

The United Kingdom’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has announced a Vulnerability Research Initiative (VRI) to improve engagement with cybersecurity experts from the community.
The NCSC, the United Kingdom’s cybersecurity agency, already has a team in place that conducts vulnerability research on a wide range of technologies and products.
This in-house research helps both consumers and businesses to get informed about potential security risks of technologies and software products, and to take measures to neutralize these risks.
In addition, the agency works closely with government entities, technology companies, and the wider public to share and implement insights and strategies.
To intensify the collaboration with external cybersecurity experts and other security professionals in the community, the NCSC has launched a new Vulnerability Research Initiative, or VRI. The program aims to improve the NCSC’s capacity to identify and mitigate hardware and software vulnerabilities.
“The VRI’s mission is to strengthen the UK’s ability to carry out VR [Vulnerability Research, ed.]. We work with the best external vulnerability researchers to deliver deep understanding of security on a wide range of the technologies we care about. The external VRI community also supports us in having tools and tradecraft for vulnerability discovery,” the cybersecurity agency writes in its press release.
The VRI core team includes technical experts, relationship managers, and project managers. The team is responsible for getting requirements from the NCSC’s VR team to its VRI partners, and monitoring the progress and outputs of vulnerability research.
In the near future, the NCSC wishes to expand the VRI team with experts on topics like artificial intelligence (AI) vulnerabilities.
Cybersecurity experts interested in teaming up with the NCSC’s VRI team are invited to contact the agency at [email protected] and tell all about their skill set and focus areas.
