Instant translation on the go, Deepl announces AI voice translation service Deepl Voice
Deepl, known for its eponymous text translation service, is adding audio translation to its portfolio. Thanks to Deepl Voice, people can listen to someone speaking in one language and translate it to another in real-time.
Deepl Voice is aimed at translating live conversations and video conferencing, as was demonstrated in Deepl’s conference called Deepl Dialogues in Berlin last Wednesday.
Deepl’s newest technology is powered by artificial intelligence (AI) models that were trained on numerous datasets, taking into account different accents and environments.
“DeepL is already a leader in written translation, but real time speech translation is an entirely different story,” says Jarek Kutylowski, CEO and founder at Deepl.
In a blog post he explains the complexity of real-time audio translation into text.
“When translating speech as it happens, you’re dealing with incomplete input, pronunciation issues, latency and more, all of which can lead to inaccurate translations and poor user experience. These are the same challenges that are oftentimes faced in human conversation that can lead to misunderstandings, so we built a solution that would take these into account from the offset and enable businesses to break down language barriers by enabling them to communicate in multiple languages as required.”
Deepl Voice consists of two separate products: Deepl Voice for Meetings and Deepl Voice for Conversations.
Deepl Voice for Meeting’s goal is to eliminate language barriers during virtual meetings. Participants can speak in their own language and Deepl Voice shows translated captions in real-time. Deepl Voice for Conversations works on mobile devices in one-on-one conversations and provides audio-to-text translations in real-time as well.
Deepl Voice is available to businesses worldwide and currently supports 13 spoken languages: English, German, Japanese, Korean, Swedish, Dutch, French, Turkish, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and Italian. Support for more languages is on its way.
Translated captions are available in all 33 Deepl Translator supported languages.
