Microsoft announces end of support for Exchange Server 2016 and 2019

Approximately one year from now, on October 14, 2025, Microsoft will no longer offer support for Exchange Server 2016 and Exchange Server 2019.

Anyone using one of these services will no longer receive technical support for problems that may occur, bug fixes or security updates for vulnerabilities.

“Customer installations of Exchange 2016 and Exchange 2019 will of course continue to run after October 14, 2025. However, due to the upcoming end of support date and potential future security risks, we strongly recommend customers act now,” Product Marketing Manager for Exchange Online and Exchange Server Scott Schnoll says in a blog post.

By ‘act now’ he means that businesses and organizations should either migrate to Exchange Online, or upgrade to Exchange Server Subscription Edition (SE).

Switching from Exchange Server 2016 or Exchange Server 2019 to Exchange Online or Microsoft 365 has one major advantage according to Schnoll: you’ll no longer need to maintain an on-premises email server. Using Microsoft’s cloud technology, you’ll also benefit from new features, including advanced generative AI technologies that aren’t available on-premises.

Companies and organizations that wish to run their email server software on-premises, Microsoft is introducing Exchange Server SE. This version will be available early second half of 2025.

Administrators running Exchange 2019 are advised to keep their Exchange servers up-to-date till the point Exchange Server SE arrives. Then they can update their servers to Exchange Server SE.

In the case of Exchange 2016, Microsoft recommends upgrading to Exchange 2019 first and then performing an in-place upgrade to Exchange Server SE.

In addition to Exchange Server 2016 and Exchange Server 2019, several other products will also reach the end of their support. Those include Microsoft Office 2016, Microsoft Office 2019, Outlook 2016, Outlook 2019, Skype for Business 2016, Skype for Business 2019, Skype for Business Server 2015, and Skype for Business Server 2019.
