OpenAI releases free version of Advanced Voice Mode and rolls out Deep Research to all paying users

OpenAI has made a free version of Advanced Voice Mode publicly available for all users. Users with a paid subscription are able to use a feature called Deep Research.

In a post on social media platform X, OpenAI announces that Advanced Voice Mode is now free to use for all ChatGPT users. This feature was revealed in May 2024, but has only been available in Europe since October for paying subscribers.

Advanced Voice Mode is a voice assistant that allows users to have a real-time conversation with ChatGPT. According to OpenAI, the enhanced version can recognize the user’s state of mind by the tone of voice and the speed of talking, and respond with more emotion. In addition, Advanced Voice Mode allegedly responds to user questions about as quickly as humans do.

The free version of Advanced Voice Mode is powered by GPT-4o mini AI model to give all ChatGPT users a chance to preview it across platforms. “The natural conversation pace and tone are similar to the GPT-4o version while being more cost effective to serve,” the AI developer promises.

ChatGPT users with no paid subscription may use Advanced Voice Mode for a limited time per day. It is unclear what the exact limits are, but according to OpenAI, paying subscribers can speak to the chatbot five times longer. Pro users will have unlimited access.

In addition, OpenAI’s Deep Research feature is available for all paying customers. Deep Research allows users to control an AI agent to independently conduct thorough research. For example, Deep Research can generate scientific reports based on web pages, images and PDF files. The AI agent needs between 5 and 30 minutes to complete the process.

Earlier this month, Deep Research became available for ChatGPT Pro users, who pay $200 a month. The ChatGPT agent is now also rolling out to all ChatGPT Plus, Team, Edu, and Enterprise users.

To start, ChatGPT Plus, Team, Enterprise, and Edu users will have 10 deep research queries per month. Pro subscribers will have 120 deep research queries per month. Deep Research uses OpenAI’s o3 language model.
