Proton's Lumo 2.0 offers better reasoning and can generate images

Proton has announced Lumo 2.0, the latest version of its privacy-friendly encrypted AI assistant, with several new features, including generating and analyzing images.

A year ago, Proton launched Lumo, an AI chatbot that focuses on privacy.

Users’ privacy is guaranteed in several ways. For starters, Proton doesn’t keep records of user logs. Instead, conversations with Lumo are stored locally.

Secondly, conversations are encrypted with so-called zero-access encryption, meaning that neither Proton nor other third parties can read users’ chats. It also means that Proton can’t share data with other companies because it has no data to share.

Lastly, unlike other AI companies, user conversations or other inputs aren’t used to train large language models (LLMs). Instead, Lumo is based upon open-source language models and operates from Proton’s European datacenters, such as Nemo, Qwen, GPT-OSS 120B, and Kimi K2.

Since the launch, more than 10 million people have started using Lumo. And Proton never stopped developing its AI-powered chatbot.

On Tuesday, Proton rolled out Lumo 2.0, calling it the “biggest leap in capability yet.”

According to an independent benchmark, Lumo 2.0 Lite scores 127% higher than its previous version, Lumo 1.4. The more powerful Lumo 2.0 Max scores 240% higher, right behind GPT-5.5 and Claude Opus 4.8 on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index.

As of yesterday, Lumo 2.0 is multimodal, meaning that the chatbot can process both text and images. Users can upload images and have Lumo 2.0 analyze them, create visuals, and edit images. Proton’s zero-access encryption applies to images as well.

In addition, Lumo 2.0 has more powerful web search capabilities, pulling live results from the web and citing sources so users can dig deeper for answers.

“It stays current on recent news and events, draws on live financial data, and can even pull in weather forecasts. The result is more accurate, more complete answers with fewer hallucinations,” Proton promises.

Lumo 2.0 is available immediately via web browsers, Android, and iOS. Lumo 2.0 Plus and Professional offer unlimited chats, advanced image generation, scalability, and dedicated support.
