Rumor: ‘Apple to release iPhone 17 Air in 2025’

Apple is setting the stage for releasing its thinnest iPhone to date. According to Mark Gurman, the Cupertino-based tech company is launching a brand new model this year, called the iPhone 17 Air.

The Bloomberg reporter claims that the iPhone 17 Air will be Apple’s thinnest iPhone to have ever been launched. It will be two millimeters thinner than the latest iPhones, which are only 7.8 millimeters.

Rumors about an iPhone 17 Air have been circulating the internet for several months. In November 2024, market analyst Jeff Pu claimed that Apple’s newest flagship will only be six millimeters. According to Apple analyst and follower Ming-Chi Kuo, the latest model will only be 5.5 millimeters.

In order to get such a thin design, Apple allegedly had to make some compromises. The SIM card holder will be completely replaced by eSIM. This has been the case since the launch of the iPhone 14 in 2022 in the United States. Apple is supposedly doing this worldwide with its newest iteration.

In addition, the iPhone 17 Air will allegedly have only one speaker. If this is the case, Apple would break a tradition that has been around since the iPhone 7, which was released in 2016. Since then, iPhones always had two speakers.

Furthermore, Apple would ditch mmWave 5G for a faster internet connection. Instead, the company would integrate its in-house development and production of a 5G modem in the iPhone 17 Air.

Lastly, the iPhone 17 Air allegedly comes with a 6.6 inch display, Apple A19 CPU, aluminum frame, single 48 megapixel camera on the back, single 24 megapixel front-facing camera, and 8 GB of RAM dedicated to Apple Intelligence. Apple’s Dynamic Island and Face ID will also be integrated.

The iPhone 17 series will most likely be launched in September 2025.

According to Gurman, Apple will also be launching iOS 19, new iPads, a new Apple Watch and Apple TV, and a Smart Home Hub. He doesn’t mention a new version of the company’s mixed reality headset, the Apple Vision Pro.

Lastly, Apple will be introducing new features to Apple Intelligence.
