Telefónica acknowledges data breach after message appears on the dark web

Spanish telecommunications company Telefónica has confirmed that hackers succeeded in breaching its internal ticket system and stealing customer information.

“We have become aware of an unauthorized access to an internal ticketing system which we use at Telefónica. We are currently investigating the extent of the incident and have taken the necessary steps to block any unauthorized access to the system,” the mobile network provider told BleepingComputer in an emailed statement.

The techsite contacted Telefónica when it noticed that four hackers were offering an internal Jira database on a popular hacking forum on the dark web. The threat actors claim that the compromised data includes 236,493 lines of customer data, 469,724 lines of internal tickets data, and over 5,000 internal documents. They were able to scrape approximately 2.3 GB of data.

The attackers told BleepingComputer they were able to access Telefónia’s internal ticket system last Thursday. No ransom demands have been made so far. One of the threat actors has confirmed they haven’t attempted to contact the company to extort them before leaking the stolen data online.

The attackers were able to breach Telefónica’s internal ticket system by using compromised employee credentials. Once this came to light, Telefónica performed password resets on impacted accounts to block the threat actors’ access.

According to BleepingComputer, three of the four hackers are members of a recently launched ransomware operation known as HellCat Ransomware. In November 2024, this group claimed to be responsible for a data breach at Schneider Electric, where it allegedly obtained 40 GB of internal data.

HellCat Ransomware doesn’t extort the companies they breach. Instead, it will leak all exfiltrated data if it doesn’t acknowledge the breach within 48 hours.

Telefónica is one of the largest telephone operators and mobile network providers in the world. The telecommunications company employs over 100,000 employees. According to the latest numbers, Telefónica recorded a revenue of $40.5 billion in 2024 and a gross profit of almost $20.5 billion.
