Best free live TV streaming sites in 2026

Many popular TV shows and movies are scattered across different streaming platforms like Netflix, Disney+, and Max, making it expensive to keep up with your favorite shows.

Finding free streaming websites is also a struggle. Many of these free platforms are cluttered with fake links and pop-ups, some of which are malicious and can even infect your device with malware. Not to mention the constant ads and neverending buffering that constantly interrupts your show.

Some websites promise free streaming but ask for your credit card details or prompt shady downloads. This, without a doubt, affects your streaming experience.

I collaborated with the CoolTechZone research team and tested a wide range of free live streaming websites to find safe and legal platforms that actually work. Below, you’ll find our curated list of the best free live TV streaming sites. Some recommendations are not completely free, but have extended trials you can use to watch your favorite content for free for a limited time.

NordVPN protects your online privacy when streaming for free
Free streaming services can be sketchy. To avoid any trouble, I use NordVPN. Its Threat Protection suite blocks malicious ads, pop-ups, and even trackers, enhancing my online security and privacy. In addition, NordVPN helps bypass geo-restrictions, allowing me to access streaming platforms that’s only available in certain regions.

Using a VPN for free live TV streaming websites

A VPN is necessary to safely visit free live TV streaming websites. Firstly, a lot of these websites are scattered across the world. Without a VPN, you’ll run into geo-restrictions and have no chance of streaming for free.

Secondly, nothing is ever truly free, and oftentimes, you’re paying with your security and privacy. Many VPNs have built-in ad and pop-up blockers and can even stop malware from infecting your device.

Of course, a reliable VPN is not free, but it’s a fraction of the price compared to what you would be paying for multiple streaming services. Plus, most VPNs have a free trial and 30-day money-back guarantee you can use to try out the service for free.

Here are the main reasons why you should use a VPN for streaming:

  • Access geo-restricted content. Many of the free live streaming sites below are explicitly available in specific regions. A VPN can hide your real IP address and change it with one in a different country, allowing you to bypass geo-restrictions and access these websites.
  • Hide your browsing activity from prying eyes. VPNs encrypt your internet traffic and hide it from your ISP, increasing privacy. Please note that it doesn’t guarantee complete anonymity.
  • Block malicious ads and pop-ups. Some VPNs have built-in ad blockers that filter malicious ads, pop-ups, and even trackers, which are prevalent on platforms offering free services.
  • Prevent ISP throttling. Since VPNs reroute your internet traffic through a private tunnel, they effectively hide it from your ISP. When your ISP doesn’t know what you’re doing online, it can’t throttle your speeds.

My personal favorite is NordVPN. I used it to safely access and test all of the free live TV streaming websites below. With 9,200 servers across 137 countries, NordVPN makes it easy to unblock free streaming services from anywhere in the world. What’s more, it’s one of the fastest VPNs I’ve tested, retaining 90% of the original internet speed. This means you’ll experience little to no buffering when streaming.

Best websites to stream live TV for free

The CoolTechZone research team and I tested dozens of free live TV streaming websites and evaluated them on requirements for streaming, channel coverage, subtitle availability, and streaming quality.

Keep in mind that we are not able to 100% verify their legitimacy, nor are we responsible for the overall streaming quality.

Below, you’ll find our curated list of free streaming websites that worked in January 2026.

1. BBC iPlayer

bbc iplayer banner
Sign up required:Yes
VPN required:Yes (available only in the UK)
Live channels:~12
TV coverage:Peaky Blinders, Doctor Who, David Attenborough documentaries, Wimbledon, Glastonbury
Audio and subtitles:English (primary), CC, AD, BSL. Welsh via S4C/other

Launched in 2007, BBC iPlayer is one of the most popular free streaming platforms in the UK. It’s geo-locked to the United Kingdom, so you’ll need a VPN to change your IP address to access it. Unfortunately, that won’t be enough – you’ll still need a UK postal code to create an account, which is necessary to be able to watch anything on BBC iPlayer. There are several ways to circumvent this, so you shouldn’t run into much trouble.

As a streaming service provider in the UK, most of the shows and movies on BBC iPlayer are British. There are some great finds like Peaky Blinders and older shows like Doctor Who. I also noticed a lot of documentaries and commentary pieces as well. The best part is that there are no ads since the platform is funded by a UK TV license, hence the need for the postal code.

I liked using BBC iPlayer. The homepage is great for discovering new and trending TV shows and movies. You can also browse through channels or select one of the 22 categories. There’s also a search bar if you’re looking for something specific. It’s all pretty standard for a streaming platform.

BBC iPlayer has apps for mobile, iOS and Android, smart TVs, Roku, and Chromecast. You can even stream on your PlayStation or Xbox.

2. RTE Player

Sign up required:No
VPN required:Yes (available only in Ireland)
Live channels:~4
TV coverage:Fair City, Kin, Love/Hate, GAA, Rugby World Cup, EastEnders
Audio and subtitles:English, Irish (Gaeilge); CC, AD, ISL available for some content

RTE Player is an Irish live and on-demand streaming platform that’s completely free. Since I’m not located in Ireland, I used a VPN to connect to an Irish server to access the website. It has an upper hand over BBC iPlayer since it doesn’t require you to create an account or have an Irish TV license to be able to stream for free.

It has ads, but I didn’t find them invasive. There’s usually three to four ads per episode, and I liked that you can see at what point in the video you’ll get an ad by the yellow line.

rte player ad placement
RTE Player marks ad placements

The content library is pretty impressive, you can find hit TV shows like The Handmaid’s Tale, Normal People, and Yellowstone. Although, it sometimes doesn’t have all of the seasons available.

There’s also live channels including RTE One, RTE Two, RTE News, and RTE Kids. It runs some less known programs and more Ireland-related content, especially when it comes to news.

rte player with nordvpn
I used NordVPN to bypass geo-restrictions and access RTE Player

The website is responsive and has an intuitive homepage with all of the trending shows and movies. I did miss a more extensive categories section though.

There’s also an app for the most popular operating systems and smart TVs, but you may run into trouble accessing them if you’re not in Ireland.

3. CBC Gem

cbc gem banner
Sign up required:Yes
VPN required:Yes (available only in Canada)
Live channels:~2
TV coverage:Schitt's Creek, Murdoch Mysteries, The National, NHL, NFB films
Audio and subtitles:English (primary). CC, Described Video (DV/AD). French via Ici TOU.TV

CBC Gem is a Canadian live TV and on-demand streaming platform. There’s a free, ad-supported version, and a paid, ad-free version. The free version impressed me. The ads were not invasive and there’s plenty to watch. I liked that you can set up keyboard shortcuts for rewinding and forwarding, enabling subtitles, fullscreen, and more.

I also really appreciated that kids content doesn’t have ads no matter whether you’re a paying user or not, making CBC Gem a great contender if you’re looking for something for your kids to watch.

cbc gem with vpn
I connected to a VPN server in Canada to access CBC Gem

While I needed to create an account to be able to watch anything on CBC Gem, credit card details were not required. CBC Gem has quite a variety of TV shows and movies. From old gems like Friends to modern day cooking competitions like Masterchef, you won’t be bored on CBC Gem.

4. Channel 4

channel 4 banner
Sign up required:Yes
VPN required:Yes (available only in the UK)
Live channels:~5
TV coverage:The Great British Bake Off, Gogglebox, Derry Girls, Taskmaster
Audio and subtitles:English (primary). CC, AD available

Channel 4 is a popular streaming platform in the UK. It’s completely free to watch for users in the UK. If you’re not from the UK, you’ll need a VPN to change your IP address to one in the UK to be able to access it. I used NordVPN and was able to unblock Channel 4 on the first try.

channel 4 with vpn
Since I'm not located in the UK, I connected to a VPN server in the UK to access Channel 4

Overall, the website is easy to navigate and the video player is user-friendly. While the free version has unskippable ads, which is to be expected, I found the amount of ads a bit jarring. Sometimes you can get up to 10 minutes of ads, which is very inconvenient. Of course, you can upgrade to a paid plan to remove ads, but that will cost you.

Nonetheless, I appreciated the large amount of TV shows and movies that are available to watch for free. A lot of them are British but there is plenty of international content as well. Like other free streaming platforms, Channel 4 doesn’t always have all of the seasons of certain shows, which makes them unwatchable if you want to keep up with the story.

As a free user, I was also a bit disappointed with the video quality, as I never knew whether I’d be able to stream in HD. I’d usually get SD, 720p, or 1080p if I’m lucky.

You can watch Channel 4 on Web, iOS, Android, Smart TVs, Roku, Chromecast, as well as PlayStation and Xbox.

5. Tubi TV

tubi tv banner
Sign up required:No
VPN required:Yes (available only in certain regions)
Live channels:260+
TV coverage:Scarface, Lego Movie, My Little Pony, MasterChef, FAST channels
Audio and subtitles:English (primary)

Tubi TV is a live and on-demand TV streaming platform operated by Fox. You’ll see it recommended on many forums and for good reason. The platform is completely free and has a lot of great content. From older movies like Gladiator, Legally Blonde, and Girl, Interrupted to Oscar winners such as Interstellar and The Pianist – everyone will find something on Tubi TV.

You can use Tubi TV without creating an account, which I appreciated. Although, an account is great for tracking your shows and jumping straight back in where you left off. Some users may need a VPN to access Tubi TV as it’s only available in the US, Canada, Mexico, some Latin American countries, Australia, and New Zealand. Since the number of countries is quite big, you can choose the country that’s closest to you for the best speeds.

tubi tv with vpn
I connected to a VPN in the US to access Tubi TV

Since it’s a free service, there are a lot of ads. Users report that they noticed the ad frequency increases if you regularly use Tubi TV. So, it might be a good idea to not use it as your main streaming platform. Nonetheless, the ads aren’t invasive or malicious – I got around 5 ads that last a few minutes throughout one movie.

6. eVOD

evod banner
Sign up required:Yes
VPN required:Yes (available only in the South Africa)
Live channels:Unavailable
TV coverage:Local SA movies (Piets Sake), Afrikaans telenovelas
Audio and subtitles:English, Afrikaans

eVOD is an ad-supported South African streaming platform. It’s great for watching South African TV shows and movies but has not much else to offer. There are plenty of eVOD originals and some older, obscure international movies but who knows, you might find a gem somewhere in there.

While ads are expected on a free streaming service, I found them excessive and rather annoying. There are even ads on paid subscriptions.

evod with nordvpn
I connected to a South African NordVPN server to access eVOD

I watched eVOD directly on the website but you can also get an app for iOS and Android. It also claims to support smart TVs but I was unable to test it out myself. The website was not the easiest to navigate, and I constantly ran into some kind of issue, like being unable to watch catch-ups if I missed the live stream. The quality was not too bad, although it maxed out at 720p.

7. ITVX (ITV)

itvx banner
Sign up required:Yes
VPN required:Yes (available only in the UK)
Live channels:~5
TV coverage:Coronation Street, Love Island, Mr Bates vs The Post Office, Six Nations Rugby, FA Cup
Audio and subtitles:English (primary) and CC available

ITVX is yet another British streaming platform with a completely free tier – no credit card required. The free tier is supported by ads, and you’ll have to sign up to be able to watch anything. Similar to BBC iPlayer, you’ll need a UK post code to create an account. I had no problems signing up and accessing the website – just make sure to use a VPN if you’re not located in the UK.

The platform itself is user-friendly and easy to navigate. There are no ads or popups when you’re not streaming, which is great and makes for a smoother navigation. The homepage is filled with new and trending TV shows and movies you can explore when you don’t know what to watch. I found some old school gems like Mean Girls, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Fast and Furious. Plus there’s a nice collection of kid-friendly content as well.

itvx with vpn
I accessed ITVX by connecting a VPN server in the UK first

I watched ITVX on the web but there are plenty of apps for different platforms if that’s what you prefer. This includes iOS, Android, most smart TVs, Roku, Chromecast, and even PlayStation and Xbox.

8. JioHotstar

jiohotstar banner
Sign up required:Yes
VPN required:Yes (available only in India)
Live channels:Exact number unavailable
TV coverage:IPL Cricket, Bollywood/regional films, Asur, Disney+/HBO/NBCU content (Premium)
Audio and subtitles:10+ Indian languages (Hindi, Tamil etc.), audio track switching, subtitle customization via extensions

JioHotstar is an Indian streaming platform with a free tier. It’s ad-supported, meaning your streaming will be interrupted with short ads. JioHotstar was created in early 2025 when JioCinema and Disney+ Hotstar were merged into one platform.

You must have an account to stream on JioHotstar. If you’re not located in India, the process can be quite a hassle. That’s because it requires an Indian phone number, which is not easy to get if you’re not in India. Of course, you’ll also need a VPN to change your IP address.

jiohotstar with nordvpn
I was able to unblock JioHotstar by connecting to a NordVPN server in India

All in all, JioCinema is a great free streaming platform with a large content library of both Indian and international TV shows and movies. Unfortunately, a lot of them are locked behind a paywall.

9. MX Player

mx player banner
Sign up required:Yes
VPN required:Yes (available only in India)
Live channels:Exact number unavailable
TV coverage:Aashram, Mastram, Vikram Vedha, Bigg Boss
Audio and subtitles:English, Hindi, Punjabi, Gujarati, Bengali, and other Indian languages

MX Player is another Indian streaming platform you can use to watch movies and TV shows for free. It’s owned by Amazon, and its free tier runs ads while you stream. Unfortunately, you can’t skip these ads, and there’s quite a lot of them, so it can get annoying after a while.

Since MX Player is an Indian streaming service, you’ll need to be located in India to access it. I used NordVPN to connect to a server in India to bypass these geo-blocks. However, that’s not all – you’ll also require an Indian phone number to create an account and that can be quite difficult if you don’t live there or know anyone who does.

mx player with vpn
I connected to a VPN server in India to bypass geo-restrictions and access MX Player

If you’re a fan of K-Drama, you’ll enjoy MX Player. There are plenty of new and trending South Korean TV shows, most of which are dubbed in Hindi. Overall, I enjoyed using MX Player and didn’t run into any major issues.

10. 9Now (Nine Network)

9now banner
Sign up required:Yes
VPN required:Yes (available only in Australia)
Live channels:~5
TV coverage:Love Island, Married At First Sight, NRL, Top Gear UK
Audio and subtitles:English (primary), CC available for some content

9Now is an Australian live and on-demand streaming platform operated by Nine Network. It’s completely free for those residing in Australia. 9Now has ads but there are very few of them – there’s usually only 2 per video. Best of all, there are no malicious ads or popups.

9 now with vpn
I unblocked 9Now by connecting to a VPN server located in Australia

If you’re not located in Australia, you’ll have to use a VPN to access 9Now. Unblocking it is easy, but expect slower speeds, especially if you’re far away from the Australian servers. During my testing, I noticed that the videos were loading significantly longer, but if you give it a few minutes to load fully, you’ll have no problems streaming.

I appreciated having a large selection of Australian and international content to choose from. From the latest seasons of Love Island USA to old reality TV like Dance Moms, 9Now is a great option for those who love reality TV. There are also some old school TV shows like Supernatural and The Vampire Diaries as well as some obscure movies, but it’s not the best option if that’s what you’re looking for.

11. 10 play (Network 10)

10play banner
Sign up required:Yes
VPN required:Yes (available only in Australia)
Live channels:~4
TV coverage:MasterChef Australia, Neighbours, A-League football, F1 (Aus GP)
Audio and subtitles:English (primary); CC available for some content

10Play is another free Australian streaming platform. It’s operated by Network 10 and is completely free if you reside in Australia. I used a VPN to change my IP address to one that’s located in Australia to access 10Play. Like 9Now, I ran into some speed issues, but it’s not a big problem if you have some patience and give some time for the content to fully load.

Overall, the platform is easy to navigate, although the interface is quite outdated. Again, like 9Now, 10Play is mainly focused on reality TV. I found loads of reality TV shows to watch as well as some comedies like Friends and The Big Bang Theory.

10play with vpn
I connected to an Australian VPN server to access 10 play

As for ads, there are quite a lot of them, and they definitely affect the viewing experience, and you can’t stop the ads with an ad-block. Nonetheless, it’s a free streaming service, so it’s to be expected.

12. Plex TV

plex tv banner
Sign up required:No
VPN required:No
Live channels:300+
TV coverage:Transporter 3, The Walking Dead, 300+ FAST channels
Audio and subtitles:English (primary), language availability depends on content

Plex TV is a free international streaming platform that’s legal and safe to use. It doesn’t require an account or VPN to use – just go to the website and stream instantly. Even though it’s free, there’s plenty of great content on Plex TV. I found some gems like Orange is the New Black, Mad Men, The Walking Dead, and The Hunger Games among many others.

If you’re a horror fan, Plex TV has something for you – there are loads of horror movies and TV shows you can binge. There’s also hundreds of live TV channels, including news, sports, movies, and many other categories, so you can run through those if you can’t decide on what to watch. Unfortunately, you can’t rewind if you miss something live.

plex tv with vpn
I used Plex TV with a VPN that has a built-in ad and tracker blocker to increase my online privacy

The platform is pleasant to use – you’ll usually get a few ads in the beginning of the video and throughout, but they’re not long and let you get back into whatever it was you were watching quickly.

13. Pluto TV

pluto tv banner
Sign up required:No
VPN required:Yes (available only in the US and some countries in Europe)
Live channels:~250
TV coverage:Star Trek, The Walking Dead, Judge Judy, The Godfather
Audio and subtitles:English, Spanish CC available for most content

Pluto TV is a free streaming platform based in the US that offers live and on-demand TV. It’s super easy to use, you don’t even need to sign up to start streaming. Like Plex TV, it mainly has older TV shows and movies.

I found some loved rom-coms like How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, but I had to dig to find some good movies – the rest are quite obscure or really old. If you like anime, you can also find some older shows like Naruto, Sailor Moon, and Bleach.

plutotv streaming
I used a VPN to see how the content library changed in different countries

The platform is ad-supported and I noticed that the ads, while short, are quite frequent – around 5 ads per movie. I was also annoyed at the constant popups asking you to create an account if you’re watching without logging in. Nonetheless, I didn’t run into any malicious ads or popups during my testing.

14. SBS On Demand (SBS)

sbs on demand banner
Sign up required:Yes
VPN required:Yes (available only in Australia)
Live channels:~5
TV coverage:International films (Animalia, Train to Busan), World Movies
Audio and subtitles:English (primary). Strong multilingual content focus (subtitled). Interface in Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, Korean, Vietnamese

SBS On Demand is an Australian live and on-demand TV streaming service. While it doesn’t have too many live channels, there are plenty of on-demand TV shows you can choose from. Some of my finds include The Handmaids Tale, Why Women Kill, Cobra, and South Park. I wasn’t able to find great movies though – most of the movies on SBS are quite old and obscure.

sbs streaming with vpn
I connected to a VPN server in Australia to bypass geo-restrictions and access SBS

I had to connect to an Australian VPN server and create an account before I could watch anything on SBS. There were plenty of ads while streaming, but no popups.

While you can opt out of one advertising category (betting, alcohol, or QSR), I found it strange that users aren’t allowed to opt out of all of them. This makes SBS a bad choice for families with children as you may get inappropriate ads.

15. ServusTV

servus tv banner
Sign up required:No
VPN required:Yes (available only in Austria)
Live channels:1
TV coverage:Live sports (MotoGP, F1 insights, Red Bull events), docs, regional culture
Audio and subtitles:German (primary); English commentary for some live sports

ServusTV is an Austrian streaming platform run by Red Bull. Naturally, most of the content on ServusTV is related to sports, although you can still find some documentaries and interviews.

The interface of the platform is in German, and there is no option to change it to English or any other language. I used the browser to translate the website, but it was quite difficult to navigate because of the language barrier. So, ServusTV is probably the best for those who understand German.

servustv with vpn
I used a VPN to access ServusTV

I also wasn’t a fan of ads outside of streaming. I saw plenty of banner ads while scrolling through ServusTV, which made the platform look less reliable and trustworthy, even though the ads didn’t seem malicious.

16. 7plus (Seven Net.)

seven plus banner
Sign up required:Yes
VPN required:Yes (available only in Austria)
Live channels:~6
TV coverage:Home and Away, Farmer Wants a Wife, LIV Golf, Supercars, NFL, Olympics (implied)
Audio and subtitles:English (primary); CC available for some content

7plus is an ad-supported Australian streaming platform. It offers live and on-demand TV to those residing in Australia. I had no problems navigating the website, even though it was a bit outdated. I used a VPN to access it and ran into some loading issues. Using 7plus with a VPN felt quite clunky because of the waiting times.

A lot of the content is Australian but you can also find some international movies and TV shows, particularly when it comes to reality TV. I found Dr. House, The Good Doctor, and Keeping Up With The Kardashians to name a few.

7plus with vpn
I used a VPN to bypass geo-restrictions and unblock 7plus

Since the platform is supported by ads, you’ll see plenty of them. However, there are no banner ads and popups, so it’s not as invasive as other platforms can be.

17. STV Player

stv player banner
Sign up required:Yes
VPN required:Yes (available only in the UK)
Live channels:1 (available in Scotland)
TV coverage:Coronation Street, Unforgotten, Taggart, Celebrity Big Brother
Audio and subtitles:English (primary). CC, AD, Visually Signed versions available for some content

STV Player is a free streaming platform for viewers in the UK. Originally a catch-up service for Scotland, STV Player has morphed into a live and on-demand streaming platform with an ad-supported free tier and a paid ad-free subscription.

The website is locked for users in the UK, so if you’re not located in the UK, you’ll need to use a VPN. You’ll also require a post code to create an account.

Naturally, there are ads while streaming, but they’re not too long. I also noticed some banners promoting the paid subscription but they’re also infrequent and not invasive.

stv player with vpn
I had no problems unblocking STV Player with a VPN – streaming quality was not affected

Most of the content on STV Player is British, but there are some international titles. I found the platform easy to use, although it could use some improvement, such as separating TV shows and movies.

I also liked that most videos had subtitles available. Some even had a visual signing option.

18. ThreeNow

three now banner
Sign up required:Yes
VPN required:Yes (available only in New Zealand)
Live channels:~4
TV coverage:Longmire, The Fall, Below Deck, Broadchurch, local NZ shows, WBD content
Audio and subtitles:English (primary)

Threenow is a free streaming platform available in New Zealand. Naturally, a lot of its content is related to New Zealand, but you can find some international hits and even a few Oscar winners.

Personally, I found Threenow when I was looking for a way to watch Dune for free. Unfortunately, it only has the first part, but there are plenty of other movies to watch on Threenow, such as Blade Runner 2049, Dunkirk, and La La Land. There’s not a lot of shows to choose from though, unless you’re looking for reality TV.

The platform is funded by advertisers, so you’ll have to watch some ads to unlock free content. I didn’t find them too distracting and I was happy there were no popups or banner ads to interrupt my streaming experience.

threenow with vpn
I used a VPN to unblock Threenow and start watching

I also really liked the design of the website – it felt as if I was using a paid service such as Netflix or Amazon Prime Video. The interface was clean and easy to navigate. If you prefer using an app, Threenow supports the most popular platforms. Although, you might have trouble downloading them if you’re not in New Zealand. In addition, I would have preferred to have an option to stream without signing up though.

19. TVNZ+

tvnz banner
Sign up required:Yes
VPN required:Yes (available only in New Zealand)
Live channels:~3
TV coverage:The North Water, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, The Ashes cricket, FIBA basketball
Audio and subtitles:English (primary); Te Reo Māori content available

TVNZ+ is another free live TV streaming website based in New Zealand. It’s an official platform, so you don’t have to worry about malicious ads or pop-ups. However, since it’s free, you’ll have to watch some ads, and, in the case of TVNZ+, there are quite a lot of ads compared to other platforms on this list.

I’m not located in New Zealand, so I had to use a VPN to bypass geo-restrictions. Then, I also had to create an account to be able to stream, but you can browse without the account to see if there’s anything worth watching.

Most of the movies are older such as 13 Going 30, Tomb Raider, and Bean but you can find some newer ones like House of Gucci. While the TV show selection didn’t wow me, I did find some interesting titles like The Walking Dead: Dead City, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and The Office.

tvnz streaming
Connecting to a VPN server in New Zealand helped me unblock TVNZ+

TVNZ+ has a clean and intuitive interface on both the website and its apps. There are apps for the major operating systems as well as most smart TVs, so you can watch on the big screen.

20. Dailymotion

dailymotion banner
Sign up required:No
VPN required:No
Live channels:Unavailable
TV coverage:User-generated content, news, music videos, partner content (varied)
Audio and subtitles:Multi-language interface and auto-subtitles (FR, EN, ES, TR, DE, AR, IT)

Dailymotion is an old school streaming platform that you may know if you were online in the early 2000s. It’s kind of like YouTube, but way less intuitive. Mainly, you’ll find short, user-generated content by companies like Mojo, Genius, and GQMagazine, all of which are available on YouTube as well.

dailymotion with vpn
I was able to stream Dailymotion without needing a VPN

There are some unique channels, particularly for news, weather broadcasts, and sports, but the videos are rather short. Overall, Dailymotion is a decent YouTube alternative, but it’s mainly a platform for user-generated content and hardly has any TV shows or movies you can watch.

Whether a free streaming website is legal or not depends on a few factors, including where you live and copyright laws. Some websites are fully licensed; however, many don’t have any broadcasting rights and aggregate streams from third parties, which is a bit of a grey area when it comes to legality.

Depending on where you live, you could face legal consequences for streaming copyrighted content for free. Illegal streaming websites fall under this umbrella, and could lead to legal notices for your ISP, hefty fines, and even jail time. While many countries have laws against streaming pirated content, very few actually prosecute people for it.

A VPN can help improve your privacy, by masking your IP address and hiding your internet traffic from your ISP. Nonetheless, it doesn’t make streaming pirated content legal.

While there are many free streaming websites, make sure to stay cautious and use only legal platforms. Most importantly, understand and follow the laws in your country before you decide whether you want to use these websites.

Are these websites safe to use?

I listed free streaming websites that I tried and tested myself to ensure they’re safe to use. Nonetheless, some of these websites were a bit sketchy. I ran into a few intrusive ads and pop-ups trying to trick you into clicking on them. A lot of these pop-ups lead to suspicious websites and may even inject malware into your device.

When using a free streaming platform, choosing a VPN with a built-in adblock is ideal. Not only will you be able to bypass geo-restrictions, the VPN will also block any malicious ads and pop-ups, improving the overall streaming experience.

Final thoughts

You can watch live TV for free – you just have to know where to look. And you don’t have to look far. Together with the research team, I tested and ranked 20 free live TV streaming websites, all of which, as of January 2026, are safe and completely legal to use.

While most of the websites are official, some of them are unverified, so stay cautious when visiting them. I recommend using a VPN with a built-in ad and pop-up blocker to ensure your streaming session is not interrupted with constant ads and malicious pop-ups. My top pick is NordVPN, which includes Threat Protection – an online security suite that blocks malicious downloads, ads, pop-ups, and even trackers. Whether you’re looking for trending TV shows, the latest movies, sports, or news, you can stream it for free on one of the platforms on our list. Stay safe and stream smartly with a VPN.
