Millions of users are watching TV through Android TV . Now is the time to install a VPN on your devices to push their boundaries by unlocking streaming content with geographical restrictions.

5 best VPNs for Netflix
  1. NordVPN: The best VPN for Android TV.
  2. Surfshark: Pocket-friendly, multiple device Android TV VPN.
  3. ExpressVPN: Versatile Android TV VPN.
  4. PIA: Android TV VPN with humongous server fleet.
  5. CyberGhost: Android TV VPN with dedicated servers.

In 2022, I conducted a large-scale study of the popular Android TV platform among functional TV enthusiasts. Despite the fact that big-name manufacturers, such as Samsung and LG, use their own Smart TV shells in their products, if you want to watch TV via VPN, it is better to look for an alternative with Android TV.

This device is easily compatible with most popular VPNs, while with Tizen or LG's OS, you won't be able to set up a VPN without a VPN router.

But not every VPN is available in-store on Android TV.

After testing more than 30 popular services, I've selected the most effective VPN apps for Android TV.

In this article, you will find the top 10 VPNs according to the test results.

Among them, there are strong providers with completely free services, although they do have some limitations, which I will discuss below.

If you're in a hurry, here's a spoilerNordVPN performed best on the Android TV Box. It's the fastest, most reliable service that works with any streaming app.

I should also note that not all VPN providers can bypass the toughest geo-restrictions. More often than not, popular online streaming services have protections against anonymizers, including virtual private networks.

  1. Subscribe without risk.
All the VPNs on the list are protected by a 30-day money-back guarantee. In fact, you risk nothing, and you can use all premium features absolutely free. Your #1 choice should be NordVPN, as it's the best VPN for Android TV.
  2. Install the VPN app.
Download the software of your chosen VPN. For example, if you're planning on getting NordVPN, it's available on every app store for all major platforms. Otherwise, you can always go to the NordVPN webpage and get it from there.
  3. Run the app.
If you're new to VPNs, you'll have to register and pick a subscription. Once again, if you opt for NordVPN, your best bet is to grab a long-term subscription.
  4. Turn on the VPN connection.
Find a server you want to join, or press quick connect. After that, all apps on your Android TV will work through the VPN tunnel and have a new IP address for the selected country.

Benefits of Android TV VPN

As I said before, there are several main reasons why it's worth running a VPN on Android TV. But what real improvements can be made with this, and how does it work?

Increase internet speed

While a VPN can't increase your internet speed per se, it can help you prevent your ISP (Internet Service Provider) from throttling your bandwidth.

At some point, I noticed that it takes way too long for videos to load on major streaming sites. Even when I decreased the quality, buffering was still haunting me.

At the same time, everything else, including YouTube, Messenger, and other websites, worked perfectly fine.

The situation repeated itself with at least three different streaming sites. After I ran some speed tests and I figured out that my ISP is limiting my bandwidth.

After installing and running NordVPN, I had no issues with speed drops, and I could stream everything in 4K.

Bypassing geo-restrictions of streaming platforms

The most common reason for using a VPN on smart devices and TVs is to access content that's usually blocked due to copyright laws. Most extensive streaming platform libraries are usually available in certain regions, for example, the US, the UK, or even China.

To view geo-restricted content, you won't have to travel to a different country. You can hide your real IP address and virtually hop to another region. In the process, you will trick the streaming platform and gain access to a plethora of shows and movies.

And a VPN is the best solution. But not all providers are suitable for this. Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, and many more platforms have robust firewalls that not every VPN can sneak through. Luckily, that shouldn't be a problem with the ultimate Android TV VPN.

Unblocking websites

Thanks to censorship or governmental restriction, loads of people globally don't have access to websites, apps, and news outlets. Additionally, in some regions, citizens might get punished for accessing Western media.

Thankfully, a VPN will help you create secure encrypted traffic, making it impossible to crack. That way, no one can breathe down your neck, and you can finally enjoy free internet on your Android TV.

Best VPNs for Android TV: overview

There are five criteria by which you can determine how suitable a VPN is for Android TV:

  1. Service has an extensive, preferably self-owned, RAM-only, server fleet
  2. Provider offers dedicated apps for Android TV and other devices
  3. VPN can guarantee stable and fast connectivity
  4. Provider has a spotless reputation when it comes to privacy
  5. Service comes packed with loads of nifty security features

I researched all of these characteristics, and as a result, I have selected the 5 best VPN apps for Android TV. Moreover, you can use some of them for free and I'll tell you how in a bit.

1. NordVPN – the best VPN for Android TV

NordVPN for Android TV

  • Streaming platforms: Disney+, Netflix, ESPN, BBC iPlayer, Amazon Prime Video, HBO Max, Hulu, CBS, and others
  • Video quality: Ultra HD
  • Ease of installation (out of 10): 10
  • Speed: Ultra-high (> 1200 Mbps)
  • Money back guarantee: 30 days
  • TV technologies: Dedicated app, Smart DNS
  • Infrastructure: 5600+ servers in 60+ countries
  • Number simultaneous connections: 6

The best VPN for Android TV is NordVPN, as it's most reliable services on the market. Additionally, it's one of the swiftest VPNs, thanks to proprietary, ultra-fast NordLynx tunneling protocol. What it gives you is:

  1. Unrivaled connection speed. Due to the minimal latency when connecting to the VPN server, the start-up time of Android TV with VPN is almost the same as going through unencrypted traffic.
  2. Significantly lesser load on the processor. The NordLynx tunneling protocol won't strain your device, even if it's an older one.

These benefits are complemented by 5600+ servers in 60+ countries. Even during peak hours, the load is distributed so efficiently that you won't encounter any buffering or lagging when streaming in 4K even on the most popular servers.

2. Surfshark – pocket-friendly, multiple device Android TV VPN

Surfshark for Android TV

  • Streaming platforms: Netflix, BBC iPlayer, ESPN, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, Peacock, and many more
  • Video quality: Ultra HD
  • Ease of installation (out of 10): 9
  • Speed: High (> 890 Mbps)
  • Money back guarantee: 30 days
  • TV technologies: Dedicated app, Smart DNS

  • Number simultaneous connections: Unlimited

Surfshark VPN is the most affordable VPN on this list for long-term subscribers. Additionally, the provider offers no device limit, and robust security and privacy features.

Thanks to amazing geo-bypassing capabilities and Camouflage Mode (Stealth VPN) you can enjoy loads of content in highly restricted countries like China, Russia, Iran, Egypt, and many more.

Moreover, you can make a use of Smart DNS feature, which will let you use VPN on devices that don't usually suport the service, like consoles or smart TVs. And binging shows in 4K won't be a problem with the WireGuard tunneling protocol.

3. ExpressVPN – versatile Android TV VPN

ExpressVPN for Android TV

  • Streaming platforms: Netflix, ESPN, BBC iPlayer, Amazon Prime Video, HBO Max, Hulu, Peacock, and others
  • Video quality: Ultra HD
  • Ease of installation (out of 10): 8
  • Speed: Maximum (> 100 Mbps)
  • Money back guarantee: 30 days
  • TV technologies: Dedicated app, Smart DNS
  • Infrastructure: 3000+ servers in 94+ countries
  • Number simultaneous connections: 5

I recommend ExpressVPN when you need to get guaranteed unblocked streaming content on Android TV and any other platform.

The service provides pretty good speeds thanks to prorietary Lightway tunneling protocol. Additionally, you won't run into any geo-bypassing problems on major streaming platforms, for the most part.

Moreover, Express VPN is compatible with multiple other devices and you can use 5 simultaneous connections to protect them all. And even if you live in a higlhy restricted country like China, you can browse trouble-free.

There are a few drawbacks however. Express VPN is owned by Kape Technologies, meaning that your privacy might get compromised. Additionally, it's the most expensive VPN on the list, so it's better to get a more reliable and cheaper VPN like NordVPN.

4. Private Internet Access - Android TV VPN with humongous server fleet

Private Internet Access for Android TV

  • Streaming platforms: ESPN, ITV Hub, Pandora, Sky TV, and others
  • Video quality: Ultra HD
  • Ease of installation (out of 10): 5
  • Speed: High (> 80 Mbps)
  • Money back guarantee: 30 days
  • TV technology: Dedicated app
  • Infrastructure: 10,000+ servers in 80+ countries
  • Number simultaneous connections: 10

While PIA offers an insane amount of servers worldwide, it's not very good at bypassing geo-blocks. Additionally, while it has the Wireguard tunneling protocol, the speeds are not ultra-fast either. It's a bit of a shady provider because they are owned by Kape Technologies. More so, their no-log policy is very vague, it's impossible to ensure that they won't collect your data.

However it can unlock Netflix US on your Android TV. Furthermore, you can use PIA on 10 different devices under one subscription. Lastly, it has great core VPN features, like a kill switch and military-grade encryption.

All in all, Private Internet Access is worth your attention if you don’t particularly care about logging policies or need it only for unblocking US Netflix or Hulu.

5. CyberGhost – Android TV VPN with dedicated servers

CyberGhost for Android TV

  • Streaming platforms: Netflix (5 countries), HBO Max, BBC iPlayer, Hulu, YouTube, and others
  • Video quality: Full HD
  • Ease of installation (out of 10): 6
  • Speed: Medium (> 80 Mbps)
  • Money back guarantee: 45 days
  • TV technologies: Dedicated app, Smart DNS
  • Infrastructure: 7400+ servers in 89+ countries
  • Number simultaneous connections: 7
  • Disadvantage: Low speed

The next VPN service is somewhat controversial. CyberGhost is one of the largest provider with 7400+ servers in 89+ locations. However, testing the most popular locations for streaming revealed very mediocre speeds, even with the WireGuard tunneling protocol. And that's dissapointing, to say the least.

CyberGhost is on this list, due to dedicated servers they offer. These will help you access streaming platforms easier, as you'll be the only one using the static IP address.

Unfortunately, this does not guarantee high video quality, since the speed at key locations can drop to 4 Mbps and below.

VPN router for Android TV

If for some reason you can't run the VPN app on Android TV, then you can turn a regular router into a VPN router. Your best bet is to grab NordVPN because it's one of the easiest VPN to set up.

You can turn a regular Wi-Fi network into a secure VPN network in a heartbeat.

To do this, you need to set up your Wi-Fi router using the configuration obtained from the VPN provider.

All VPNs presented in this article support routers. Additionally, you can find detailed walkthroughs on their webpages.

Installing OpenVPN on Android TV

The Android TV operating system supports the installation of .APK apps, as well as installation through the pre-installed Google Play app. However, not all apps on Android smartphones are available in the Google Play Store.

If your VPN service is not available on Google Play Store, then one effective option is to install and configure a VPN using the OpenVPN protocol.

Install OpenVPN on Android TV:

  1. From the Google Play store, install the app OpenVPN for Android.
  2. Run the installed app. You'll need to import the configuration file with the add-on. You can get it in the control panel of your VPN service.
  3. After importing the file, you need to save it. To do this, click on the icon in the upper right corner.

  4. Go to the Profiles section.
  5. To start a VPN connection, click on the line with the name of the configuration file. To close the VPN connection, click the line with the name of the configuration file again.

Bottom line

Android TV is considered the most user-friendly TV platform to use with a VPN. The Google Play Store contains dozens of VPN apps that are compatible with this platform. All you need to do is to choose the right service, such as NordVPN, subscribe, and download its app.

The VPNs listed in this article have been tested with all major streaming platforms. They support both entertainment and sports broadcasts.

In some cases, connection failures are possible because some IP addresses might get blacklisted. But I specifically selected those providers that have loads of working IP addresses and it won’t be difficult for you to simply rejoin a VPN server and unblock the streaming app for the selected country again.

I would be glad if you expressed your thoughts on the topic of the article or asked me questions. I will be happy to answer them in the comments.
