Casio says there’s ‘no prospect of recovery yet’ after cyberattack

It’s been almost two weeks since Casio suffered a data breach, and yet the company still hasn’t fully recovered from the devastating incident.
Earlier this month, hackers were able to access Casio’s corporate network and exfiltrate confidential information, including personal details of current and former employees, business partners, affiliated companies and people who visited the company in the past for an interview.
In addition, internal documents containing legal and financial information, human resources planning, audit, sales and technical information were swiped by the attackers. Finally, the people responsible for the hack were able to lay their hands on financial information, such as contracts, invoices and sales with current and past business partners.
Casio warned people to remain vigilant for any suspicious emails and other unsolicited messages. The Tokyo-based tech company also asked not to share any of the leaked information to minimize the damages.
As of writing, it’s been almost two weeks since the company was hit by a ransomware attack and many of its systems remain unusable.
Ayuko Hara, a Casio spokesperson, has told TechCrunch that the company hasn’t recovered from the incident and is still investigating the matter.
Hara confirms Casio took measures to disconnect its servers to prevent the damage from spreading, but it does have an impact on the day-to-day business operation.
“This countermeasure is affecting our receiving and placing orders with suppliers and schedule of product shipments,” he says, adding there’s “no prospect of recovery yet” as the company is trying to prioritize its customers as it’s moving forward with its recovery operation.
Furthermore, Hara tells TechCrunch that the hackers left “a threatening message” to reveal the stolen data. However, the company hasn’t received a ransom demand yet.
A few days after the data breach, Underground, a hacking group with close ties to Russia, claimed to have stolen 204,9 GB of data from Casio’s systems. The spokesperson said the company is currently investigating this claim. He can however confirm that no credit card information has been compromised.
