How Reddit users selected the best VPNs

Most Reddit users are pretty tech-savvy and know what matters the most when comparing VPN services. We summarized the criteria that Redditors highlighted and listed them below.

  • Download speed: VPNs inevitably affect your connection speeds because your online traffic has to travel a greater when connecting to an intermediary server. However, the degree of this effect varies based on various factors, the most important of which is the tunneling protocol. And so, Redditors prefer VPNs with modern options like WireGuard.
  • Security and no-logs policy: Redditors prefer VPNs that enhance their online security with ad-blocking and other critical features. Naturally, the service should also respect customer privacy and have robust no-logs policies, ideally audited by reliable third parties.
  • Streaming capabilities: Another common VPN use-case is using it to unearth extra movies and TV shows on popular streaming services. That means having a wide selection of foreign servers and a have nifty extras like Smart DNS.
  • Simple login process: A VPN that allows simple login and supports multi-factor authentication is another criteria Reddit users emphasize. It improves your account's security and improves overall convenience while using the service.
  • Pricing: Reddit users understand that the best VPNs require a subscription. They only stand by VPNs that have top-notch features and come at affordable rates with a money-back guarantee.

Best free VPNs by Reddit

It should be no surprise that Reddit users wholeheartedly don’t recommend free VPNs. They're well-known for subpar performance, security issues, and questionable reputations, among other things.

Free VPN review

However, that still doesn't stop the onslaught of threads from users asking about the best free VPNs for Reddit. And so some point out that freemium VPNs are an acceptable solution. As the name suggests, these are premium providers that also offer cost-free plans. Some notable examples include:

  • Hotspot Shield: It offers 3 server locations and up to 500 MB of data per day. Moreover, you can connect only one device at a time, and it also supports P2P.
  • Proton VPN: With a strict privacy policy and great connection speeds, Proton VPN is a good free VPN. It offers servers in 3 locations and doesn’t limit data.

As you can see, freemium VPNs have some limitations, such as fewer features, minimal server locations to choose from, and torrenting or streaming issues.

Another worthy alternative is snagging a free trial of recommended premium VPNs. While time limited, these options grant the complete benefits package for testing. Here are the top VPN options among Redditors.

  • NordVPN – a 7-day free trial is available on the Google Play Store so grab your Android device and go ahead. Alternatively, take advantage of its 30-day money-back guarantee.
  • Surfshark – an alternative for Apple fans since the 7-day free trial is also applicable on the Apple App Store. Alternatively, go the 30-day money-back guarantee route.

Now that you know the Reddit-approved VPNs, it's time to glance at the services you should steer clear of.

1. Hola VPN

Redditors dislike Hola VPN because it is a glorified P2P network rather than a conventional VPN service. It has a bad reputation for IP and DNS leaks, and its privacy and security features are not good. It can lead to serious online calamities.

2. Betternet

Betternet is better known as the VPN that Redditors frequently have issues with. They mentioned that this VPN is unreliable and includes subpar security features that don’t protect the privacy of your online activity. Most importantly, users do not like it because of its extensive data logging.

If you want to access geo-blocked content, Betternet disappoints in this regard too since it has an incredibly small server network.

I don’t understand how could it possibly be that you’ve created a list of the best VPN services based on Reddit reviews. There are millions of them. I’m just interested in how have you managed to count them. Any formulae?

Got a Torguard recommendation from Reddit a while ago. I dunno, it’s not too bad I suppose but not super good either. I bought it for a year and now I’m just sort of low key waiting for it to run out because all things considered I’m not fully satisfied with its performance. I guess the problem of following Reddit recommendations is that every person is going to recommend the particular service he or she is using even if it’s not very good. I dunno if it should be called bias or tribalism or whatever… The best way is probably to try several VPNs out if it can be done for free.

Searching for smth privacy-focused, I’ve looked through some subreddits. There I’ve found a solution – VPN. I understand that some content is promotional even on Reddit and some VPNs pay for good reviews on this site. So that I decided not to pay for the most praised service and search for smth average. Here’s how I’ve found Avast VPN among thousands Reddit comments. I don’t see it on your rating. But it doesn’t make me upset.

Hello. Thanks for your article. The funny part is, that from website to website, from one subreddit to other, these tops vary. For example I've just read Best VPN according to Reddit in 2020. They say Express is the best . So, i guess there are no BEST.

Thanks for this overview!!! I guess you had to spend weeks to study tons of subreddits to check what people really like. When I concluded I have to use a VPN, the first thing I’ve done was to visit Reddit to learn what people think about it and what services are most praised. In so doing, I’ve found on Reddit a VPN comparison chart. It was compiled by one of the users. That guy picked up everything an average user needs to know about VPNs. Of course, it simplifies the choice. But the chart lacked some points, I’ve found on here. Based on this, I’m going to start using Astrill because of its free trial option and non-standard protocols that work even in China.

Two years ago, when I was looking for a good vpn for gaming, a redditor convinced me to buy Ivacy as it seems to work fine for him. I read through all possible ivacy vpn reviews on reddit and found out that many users recommended the provider. I paid for the subscription and was disappointed by the speed of its servers. It was rather low, so online gaming was almost impossible. The fact is that there are a lot of paid comments on reddit and I don’t trust the site.

While trying to choose between purevpn vs pia I went to reddit among other places and I wasn’t really impressed by comment quality there. Like it seems half the posts I saw there were just paid shills of this vpn or that one. I have no idea how they moderate that website. But I suspect it was just a bad subforum with little to no moderation. I get that anyone can make an account there but there’s got to be some restrictions. Anyway what’s the best subreddit to get straight info in your opinion?

Dean Chester

Unfortunately, there is no best one. Every subreddit, sadly, is used in marketing purposes to some extent. The less popular a service is, the harder it is to base any objective opinion on Reddit information. All useful data has to be gathered bit by bit. That’s why we made this review.
