10 Best VPNs to Use in Thailand

Updated: July 12, 2021 By Dean Chester

Thailand is home to beautiful landscapes, wonderful people, and fascinating traditions. Unfortunately, like most of the world, it is not perfect in terms of the internet legislation and situation in general. Sometimes, you need to keep your ear to the ground to avoid penalties. And what is a better way to do that than by using a VPN?

VPN for Thailand
However, just choosing a VPN and calling it a day is not enough. Many unscrupulous people set up downright dangerous services in hopes of cheating people for money.

The so-called free VPNs are no better - in fact, they are worse. 99.9% of them are not made with the purpose of helping people out for free, but of forcing them to get the paid version of the same service at best or of selling their data to third-parties at worst.

To make the matters worse and muddy the waters further, such services employ fake reviews that make them seem good. You can generally tell something is amiss if there are only good and perfectly 5-starred reviews for a particular service, but as of late, many dishonest providers have caught on to that and started putting less stellar “customer” reviews up to make the picture more convincing.

It is really a chore to find a really good VPN these days. To lend you a helping hand, we have compiled two lists of good VPNs based on our seven-month research: one lists the best overall VPNs for Thailand while the second one enumerates good free versions of paid services that have restrictions but are at least honest.

Table of contents:

5 best VPNs for Thailand
  1. ExpressVPN: best provider for Thailand offering 256-bit encryption and 24/7 customer support.
  2. NordVPN: secure VPN for Thailand with a 30-day money-back guarantee and unlimited bandwidth.
  3. Surfshark: fast VPN for Thailand with a 30-day money-back guarantee and unlimited bandwidth.
  4. CyberGhost VPN: best VPN for Thailand offering 7 devices simultaneously and 5944 servers worldwide.
  5. Private Internet Access: great VPN service with lightning speeds and a 7-day money-back guarantee.

5 free VPNs for Thailand
  1. ProtonVPN: doesn’t limit your monthly traffic at all.
  2. Windscribe: gives you 10 Gb per month.
  3. Hide.me: provides you with 2 Gb each month.
  4. HotspotShield: limits your data use to 500 Mb per day.
  5. TunnelBear: only allows up to 1500 Mb per month (but usually less than that).

Recommendation: It is a great idea to check what VPN suits you - personally you - the best beforehand. To do that, you can use the money-back policies or free trials that most services are happy to provide.

A short overview of the Internet in Thailand

Speaking about Internet accessibility, Thailand is one of the countries that make browsing for its citizens highly restrictive. The government restricts and censors a host of websites considered as inappropriate for the political regime.

You will be definitely surprised to discover that the Thailand government has restricted access to over 100,000 websites. While many of them have something to do with preparing uprisings or similar political violence in the country, stuff like porn is also prohibited. And we do not mean child porn, which obviously must be banned. The question of how appropriate regular porn is is not an easy one, and there can be more than one opinion on it. But to our mind, enforcing the populace of an entire country to adhere to rather strict moral rules in such a blunt way is not the best idea.

If you go to a banned site in Thailand, you will encounter this image:

This isn’t great, is it?

So, there is no need to enumerate all the blocked websites and resources, we can undeniably notice that such common resources as Facebook, Instagram, Skype, YouTube are inaccessible there.

So, that is a nasty problem for many tourists and citizens of Thailand. How to unblock restricted websites in Thailand? How to use Skype in Thailand? How to avoid being censored in Thailand?

There is only one clear answer, which is known as a VPN for Thailand. The thing is that the best VPN for Thailand uses up-to-date VPN protocols which create highly defensive tunneling through which all your sensitive data becomes protected.

But how does one choose the best VPN? What are the criteria?

  • the best VPN for Thailand should hold a vast variety of server location so that you can choose any country you wish and get access to any of the geo-restricted websites;
  • a qualitative VPN for Thailand should use the strongest protocols to provide you with the highest level of encryption;
  • the best VPN for Thailand shouldn’t impose any limitations on speed level and bandwidth, otherwise you won’t be able to watch streaming services in high quality;
  • an appropriate VPN for Thailand should have a trial version and money-back guarantee so that you can try it and see that this service is easy-to-use and fast enough for your networking;
  • a good VPN for Thailand should accept different payment methods, for you to choose the most anonymous one, such as crypto-currency or digital gift card;
  • a qualitative VPN for Thailand should support various OS and be connectible to multiple devices simultaneously;
  • a reliable VPN for Thailand should provide you with a professional 24/7 support.

Five free VPNs for Thailand

Our effort in compiling a comprehensive guide to using VPN technology in Thailand would be incomplete without listing at least a few of the free VPNs. Not everybody has an opportunity to pay for a service - but internet privacy and security should be a human right. Same as many organizations, governmental or otherwise, provide relief in the form of food or water to those in need, some VPN services also go out of their way to give people a chance to protect themselves online for free.

Warning: But just as the food or shelter or clothes gotten from welfare missions are not the best, so are the VPNs we are about to tell you about. Free services are always inferior to their paid counterparts.

ProtonVPN logo
ProtonVPN

ProtonVPN is a Swiss service which is the best free VPN for a simple reason: it doesn’t limit your traffic at all.

Windscribe logo
Windscribe

If you don’t like ProtonVPN for some reason, Winsdscribe is your best next variant. Its limit is 10 Gb a month - not a lot by any stretch of imagination (especially given how poorly today’s sites are made in terms of data consumption), but kind of enough to get you through important tasks.

Hide.me logo
Hide.me

Hide.me’s main advantage is that it lets you use the SoftEther protocol - a rare guest even on the paid plans.

Hotspot Shield logo
HotspotShield

You can use HotspotShield to get somewhat faster speeds than those of the previous services.

TunnelBear logo
TunnelBear

Aside from its nice visual representation and ability to work with streaming, free TunnelBear is nothing to write home about. The reason? Its absurdly low data cap - 500 Mb a month.

FAQ

? Should I use a VPN at specific time?

It’s entirely up to you, but servers do tend to get overloaded on certain hours. You will have to define which hours it is on your own, because they obviously vary by each server.

? What’s the safest way to pay for a VPN?

If you go this route, you should know that cryptocurrencies are not exactly anonymous - but rather pseudonymous. If you really want to leave no traces, take a look at Mullvad - a very reliable service which is admittedly a bit pricey.

? Do VPNs really make me impossible to track?

Whatever your reason for asking this question is, we wholeheartedly recommend that you don’t do anything illegal online or offline - even under the protection of a VPN. You may not be found out, but it’s still not a wise idea.

Your review is like one of the many reviews on the internet giving the same kind of information about Thailand.

Yes it is true that Thai government is playing big brother online.

No it's not true that they are not technologically behind the rest of the world regarding the internet. You should rereview your own assumptions before doing a public blogpost stating false information.

And in my opinion a good VPN service is also a service where for instance they not fake or virtualise as if they have servers running in Thailand. I've tried both NordVPN and ExpressVPN. NordVPN has a mirror behind a US server when trying to connect to a Thailand VPN. And ExpressVPN has a virtual IP in front of a Singapore physical server... Which means if you want to see the Thai version of Netflix, this is not possible.

As a DevOPS guy myself, and writing blogs, I'm always sharp about what I will tell people and also am aware what the consequences are when making false statements.
