Casio temporarily suspending repair service due to cyberattack

The cyberattack that took place earlier this month still has a hold on Casio. Because of it, the Tokyo-based tech company sees no other option than to briefly put off its repair service.

“Due to a system failure that occurred on Saturday, October 5th, there is currently a significant delay in delivery of repair request items and a lot of retention,” Casio says in an update regarding the recent cyberattack.

“We are currently continuing to respond and are coordinating for system recovery at the end of November. In other words, we will stop the repair of personal products once the period until the system is restored,” the company continues.

For the time being, customers with broken devices will have to be patient and wait until all systems have been recovered. Casio apologizes for the inconvenience and promises to do its best to recover from the incident.

Earlier this month, hackers were able to access Casio’s corporate network and exfiltrate confidential information about current and former employees, and legal and financial documents. No credit card information has been compromised during the attack.

Casio asked affected customers to be cautious for phishing emails and messages, and not to share any information to minimize the impact of the attack.

Ayuka Hara, a spokesperson of the company, told the media Casio took measures to disconnect its servers to prevent the damage from spreading.

“This countermeasure is affecting our receiving and placing orders with suppliers and schedule of product shipments,” he said, adding there’s “no prospect of recovery yet” as the company is trying to prioritize its customers as it’s moving forward with its recovery operation.

A hacking group called Underground claims to have stolen 204,9 GB of data from Casio’s corporate network. Casio is currently investigating this claim.
