Kodi on iPhone and iPad [May 2022]

The best option with no time limit

Kodi on iPhone and iPad

If someone tells you that Kodi doesn't work on iOS, don't believe them. I'll let you know about an easy and effective way to install Kodi on an iPhone or iPad, which is valid for iOS 12.2 and any later version, and which I've tested on several iPhones. You will only need the device itself and a Windows or Mac computer.

Table of contents:

It's hard to imagine a more regulated platform than iOS. All apps in the Apple App Store are thoroughly tested and none among them allows you to access free streaming content. Typically, iPhone and iPad users are forced to watch movies, TV shows, sport, and other video content through a web browser for free.

But there is a solution!

In this article, I won’t only describe the process of installing Kodi on iOS, but also describe in detail all the preparatory procedures, and you, after spending 15-30 minutes, can easily watch any movies through Kodi on your iPhone or iPad.

And even more! I will show you how to transfer settings with all add-ons from your Fire TV to a configured smartphone or tablet.

⚠️Before getting to the bottom, I want to warn you that content streamed through unofficial Kodi add-ons may infringe copyright. To avoid creating problems with the law, install best VPN for Kodi after installing Kodi. I will provide a list of them at the end of the article.

The article has only a research nature and doesn’t call for copyright infringement or otherwise breaking the law. Before using Kodi, make sure that streamed Kodi add-ons free video content isn’t copyrighted.

Is it worth starting?

I want to warn you right away that the only effective technology for installing Kodi on iOS requires a Jailbreak. In short, this is the current legal way to block system protection, thanks to which we get the opportunity to install third-party apps.

This technique has two significant drawbacks:

  1. The risk of data loss during the procedure (minimal, but it exists).
  2. When updating the system, the Jailbreak disappears and you need to wait for a fresh patch.

I considered for myself that these disadvantages are negligible compared to what opportunities Jailbreak opens and did it. And everything went great!

In the next chapter I will describe the setup process, but for now, i'll tell you briefly about what will be required of you.

What do you need to install Kodi?

Most importantly, you should have a Windows or macOS computer and a cable to connect your iPhone or iPad to it.

I also recommend saving all important data to iTunes or cloud storage and synchronizing.

It sounds scary, but personally, I didn’t do it, since I have repeatedly done Jailbreak for iPhone 4, and everything always went without problems if the instructions were followed carefully.

You will also need to download and install a small piece of software on your computer. It is secure and required for Jailbreak.

If you have never installed programs on your computer yourself, or are simply afraid to mess something up, then ask someone more experienced to do it. It doesn't take long and is worth some effort.

Can I install Kodi using a third-party app?

In total, the App Store returns about ten app options for "kodi". But, having gone through them all, we were more frustrated than when we started. They were either very limited in functionality, giving only "remote" capabilities, or the media library operation had a lot of bugs. In some, the posters wouldn't load, in others, the descriptions or the interface overall was so repulsive that we had no desire to use it.

To date, we do not recommend using third-party apps to install Kodi on iOS.

Installing Kodi on iOS (step-by-step)

There are 4 ways to install Kodi on iPhone / iPad, but only one of them works for a long time. Other methods require reinstallation every 7 days for free. And for a fee, I see no reason to install Kodi.

IMPORTANT! The instructions I am suggesting are suitable for devices with iOS 12.2 or higher. For earlier versions, Jailbreak using technology described here.

Disclaimer: All information provided was obtained by me for research purposes, and I am not responsible for its further use. I don’t advocate violating the rules for distributing and receiving copyrighted content. I only describe the essence of the technology and share my research experience.

Step 1: Install AltStore.

  1. Download and install the program from on your computer.
  2. Connect your iPhone or iPad to your computer using a USB cable.
  3. Install AltStore on the connected device using AltStore on the computer.
  4. Sign in to your Apple ID account.

More detailed instructions for installing AltStore are published here.

Step 2: Install unc0ver.

  1. Open the site on your mobile device (in Safari).
  2. Click Open in AltStore.
  3. Sign in with your Apple ID.
  4. Start unc0ver.

Step 3: Make Jailbreak.

  1. Click on Jailbreak in unc0ver

Blue Jailbreak button in unc0ver app

  2. When finished, you will see the Cydia app installed. This is an analog of the AppStore. In addition to Kodi, you can find many apps that were previously unavailable.

Be careful when installing apps from Cydia. iOS has taught us that all available apps are 100% secure. Cydia doesn’t have such strict verification. Try to use the AppStore whenever possible.

Step 4: Instal Kodi

  1. Launch Cydia.
  2. Search for Kodi using the search bar, similar to how you would do in the AppStore.
  3. Select a 64-bit installation.
  4. Click Modify in the upper right corner.
  5. Click Install.
  6. Click Confirm on the required storage space.
  7. Wait and click Return to Cydia.

Congratulations! Now you have Kodi on your iPhone / iPad.

You can find more detailed instructions with pictures here (paragraph 4.1).

Step 5: Install a Kodi build (bonus).

Follow the detailed instructions for installing the Kodi build. (тут ссылка на якорь # раздела Установка сборки Kodi на странице

You can also install one or more video add-ons instead of installing a build, but I advise you to install a build, as it contains skins that will make using Kodi on iOS much more convenient.

Kodi Alternatives for iPhone

If for some reason you weren’t able to install Kodi on your iPhone, don't worry as we've put together the best Kodi alternatives for your iPhone.

Plex for iOS

Plex and Kodi are engaged in a serious rivalry, and the Plex vs Kodi debate will no doubt continue until the end of time (or until another useful app beats them).

Plex allows users to organize all their videos, music, videos, and podcasts in one place and supports media access across all devices. Like Kodi, it also has a Live TV recording feature.

Plex also offers a personalized video channel to save you time. You can either opt for a free account (Plex Free), which gives you access to a limited amount of free content, or a Plex Pass, which starts at $4.99/month for unlimited premium content.

In terms of look and feel and user experience, Plex is better than Kodi (let's just accept that you're paying for the added benefit of UI/UX).

Infuse 7

Infuse 7 is a fairly new and popular player, the main draw of which is its simple but powerful features.

It lets you play content wirelessly from a variety of sources, including PCs, FTPs, URLs and more. If a video doesn't have built-in subtitles, Infuse 7 adds them automatically.

There's also a Trakt Sync feature borrowed from Kodi. This feature allows you to sync your shows across platforms, devices, and apps.

The app also works well with your Plex account, which is a bonus. There's also the option of a professional account that gives you access to 4K video with Dolby TrueHD support, AirPlay, Google Cast, and background playback.

PlayerXtreme Media

PlayerXtreme is a video player that supports various video formats (many more than iTunes can imagine). It can play content directly from the Internet, PCs, and URLs like Kodi. It has multiple video codecs, making it easy to stream large files of media content.

It also offers support for live captioning, and you can connect to streaming services in the app. There is also a professional version that supports Airplay, Chromecast, and HD audio quality.

It may not have all the features of Kodi, but it still stands up to the heavyweights.

Don't forget about VPN protection!

So, you are the lucky owner of Kodi on a platform that at first glance could not offer you that. If you followed the advice from Step 5, then you even have the Kodi video add-ons already installed.

But don't rush to watch free video content without protection.

It is extremely dangerous to run Kodi video add-ons without masking traffic and location. They may be torrenting or receiving content from sites that violate copyright laws.

To safely explore the capabilities of Kodi and its add-ons, including those that use torrenting, you need to launch a VPN app for iOS.

I have selected the 3 best deals on the market and briefly described my opinion of them.

1. ExpressVPN

ExpressVPN for iOS

You can install an app that will 100% solve all the security and privacy issues of your Internet connection: ExpressVPN. This service offers software for any platform by subscription.

With ExpressVPN, you can also increase the quality of your streaming content if your ISP is limiting your streaming data.

ExpressVPN has been ranked as one of the most trusted VPN providers in the last 10 years. I use it for work on my iPhone and completely trust it.

You can learn more about the provider by reading my ExpressVPN review.

2. NordVPN

NordVPN for iOS

The next VPN service is on par with ExpressVPN. It has a slightly smaller coverage of countries (59 versus 94), but it supports ultra-fast connections, which makes the use of the VPN almost invisible for the Kodi user.

NordVPN is also my favorite. I chose it for home use. I like the stability of the connection and the interactive interface.

You can find out more about the provider by reading my NordVPN review.

3. Surfshark

Surfshark VPN for iOS

And Surfshark is perfect for long-term use of over a year. All good and fast VPNs work with paid subscriptions. But Surfshark makes these subscriptions virtually invisible to the wallet. It's 3x cheaper than ExpressVPN and almost 2x cheaper than NordVPN. However, only on a 2-year subscription.

Technically, it is almost on par with its competitors. The tests showed a slightly lower speed of US servers.

By the way, Surfshark works confidently in countries where VPN are blocked (Iran, China, and some others).

The best offer for Kodi builds

So, I have described the process of installing the latest version of Kodi on devices running iOS. It may seem too difficult, but following the instructions is easy enough.

You just need to take care of the presence of a computer and USB to Lightning cable in advance.

Also, it won’t be superfluous to immediately attend to the installation of trendy add-ons and protection using a VPN app.

Please write about it if you managed to install Kodi using my guide. Perhaps you think that some information needs more detailed elaboration. You can also ask any questions on the topic of the article in the comments below.

Thank u for the tips. I didn

Thank u for the tips. I didn't experience such an issue with Kodi before I got a new iphone. used to reinstall kodi literally every seven days, I also used Cydia Impactor I uploaded to avoid jailbreaking but it didn't seem so effective and required a lot of time and effort (I don't think jail-break is an option in my case). Gonna try to do as you recommended, hope it'll work.

Hi, I've recently got IPad

Hi, I've recently got IPad Air 10.9, can I install Kodi to it without jail-breaking as well? I see there is an effective way to do this with Mac and Xcode but I have only Windows 10 pc, does this scheme work exactly with this version? Also, my friend tried to use tutorial but he keeps getting an error that says there's no valid provisioning profile for this executable. Maybe you can help somehow.

Thanks for your article! I

Thanks for your article! I was afraid it's impossible, iPhones are pretty tricky gadgets, so it was a relief, phew :) You say jailbreak is obligatory, though I heard you can avoid it. Kodi is getting revoked 2-3 times per year and requires re-installation, though it shouldn't take long. Didn't try any of those yet, however. What would you recommend? Jailbreak or occasional reinstallation?

Jailbreak. Do this once to find out how convenient it is.
